Coimbatore/ Madurai/ Tiruchi Mono/ Metro Rail project (Proposed)

I am opening a new thread from Mono/Metro rail project for Coimbatore/ Madurai and Trichy. We can discuss the routes and other details of the project.

Mono rail proposal revives Coimbatore's hopes for better city transport

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Governor S.S. Barnala's address to the Legislative Assembly on Friday, outlining the decision of the State Government to study introduction of the mono rail system in Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi, has revived the hopes of Coimbatore for a solution to the problems faced by it in public transport.

Coimbatore, the second largest city in the State, accounts for a district population of 34,72,578, contributing to 4.81 per cent of the State's population. Coimbatore has a population density of 748 persons per sq km.

As in the case of any growing city, Coimbatore is no exception to the problems in public transport. Within urban areas, the only mode of transport is by road. The city managers mooted and contemplated on many solutions to ease the city's traffic. Many suggestions like the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), Metro Rail, Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) and Circular Rail were put forth.

While the cost factor spoiled the prospects of BRTS, not much effort went into MRTS. The Metro Rail is not suitable for Coimbatore as it is a radial city and not linear like Mumbai. For a radial city like Coimbatore, circular rail could bring the desired benefits, as pointed out by the consultants for the implementation of the Jawarhalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Given the growing vehicular population and lack of proportionate road space, city is desperately looking for an alternative transportation mode, as roads were getting congested fast.

A former IIT professor and who was till recently in the Technical Advisory Committee for implementation of the JNNURM, S.P. Palanisamy said that the mono rail will certainly complement the efforts to decongest the city provided the agency has the required funds and the technical know-how.

The mono rail is expected to reduce dependence on individual private vehicles and thereby reduce their numbers on the roads. Mono rail is not a new technology and was implemented in Tokyo several years ago, Mr. S.P. Palanisamy pointed out.

The project needs to be implemented on the right corridors to reap the desired benefits. Bus Rapid Transit System on Avanashi Road, Tiruchi Road and Mettupalayam Road, on a hub and spokes model, was already mooted in 2007. However, the civic body had expressed its inability to take up the project considering the huge cost involved and the share that the local body would have to shell out i.e., 30 per cent of the project cost under the JNNURM programme. After four years now, the cost of the same project has gone up by 40 per cent.

Vice-President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry R.R. Balasundharam said that the announcement on mono rail for the city is welcome. Coimbatore badly needs such transport systems for catering to the growing needs of the city. It would also help in accelerating the growth of the economy, he added.

Alternative mass transit system remains elusive

The State Government's proposal to introduce monorail as mass transit system for Coimbatore revives the hope of a public transport that decongests roads and also provides for comfortable and affordable travel.

For long, Coimbatore has endured the sight of passengers packed in buses like sardines, autorickshaws that fleece passengers and call taxis whose fare is astronomical for daily travel. These are the three modes of public transport in the city.

The number of private vehicles – cars and two-wheelers – has gone up sharply over the last 10-12 years as people want to avoid the discomfort of travelling in public transport.

This, in turn, has led to the city's limited road infrastructure getting congested. The increase in the number of vehicles is so high that the Department of Transport has to open one more Regional Transport Office.

All these years, there has been a fervent call for yet another mode of mass transit system that can ease the congestion on roads, especially one that can wean people away from private vehicles. Many options have been discussed, but none of these have materialised into a project.

Urban planners first suggested elevated or metro rail as an alternative, as in Chennai and Mumbai. This is because the carrying capacity of a train easily equals that of 13 to 15 buses. And, reduction in buses will decongest roads.

The first Coimbatore Corporation Council (1996-2001) also mooted Mass Rapid Transit System. Experts and consultants were brought in only to decide that it may not be technically suitable for Coimbatore city.

Then, the focus turned to a metro rail system, as in New Delhi and now in Bangalore. But, that too was rejected on the grounds that Coimbatore was a radial city and not linear. Then a suggestion was made for a circular rail. It could use the existing rail network and even improve upon it to establish a total, circular system around the city. And, bus services could be operated from the railway stations to central points of the city such as Gandhipuram. That proposal too was given up.

A Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) was discussed as a key component of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The project envisaged dedicated bus tracks on Avanashi Road, right from the flyover at Uppilipalayam to the city's border near the Airport.

But, officials now confirm that the proposal is still stuck with the Government. They say that the money meant for transport system improvement under the JNNURM has been used for the purchase of low-floor buses.

These buses have only added to the chaos. Their chassis is three feet longer than the normal vehicles, making it difficult for drivers to negotiate turns, especially in old city areas where the turning radius is big enough only for an autorickshaw.

Now, Coimbatore pins hopes on the monorail proposal quite desperately, as it needs yet another public transport system that can prevent disaster on its roads, which do not seem have any scope for further widening.

The ambitious flyovers and freeways plans under the JNNURM too have sunk without a trace.

“If introduced, the monorail will cater to the growing transportation needs and also serve as a mark of the city's growth,” says president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry M. Krishnan.

Is it possible to remove the tag " Proposed" and say " Under Construction" in the year 2030 ?

Railways should start suburban services between Tiruppur and Cbe. Treble the tracks and introduce MEMU's.

I could try and post it here possibly in a few days' time. I am thinking of many models of monorail routes now (though i don't know every one i think of is feasible).

Thanks Gilli for posting this. I have designed this map, routes long back(last year) with Metro dream.
I feel Metro is more useful for transporting more people than mono rail.

Thanks for giving such route, i am trying to make out an map and routes for trichy Mono.

Also these routes co-ordinates with the present road alignments mostly, so it would be difficult for the town buses, especially private lobby, so some different alignment connecting major places would be good.

Thank you so much for your initiative. I have a suggestion on these routes. All these routes starts at one place and heading to different places. We also need a circuitous route to inter connect these routes.

Almost a year , Still no news on the metro or mono for TN. Chennai Mono is still a non starter. Chennai metro phase 2 stopped.

KL already started Kochi metro, Calicut Mono and prelim work on tvm mono going on. HSR already started.

I think JJ is in no mood to compete.

I think Metro is better for Coimbatore since its population is higher.

Also, does anyone know how much power metro will consume? Who will provide that power?
