Westfield London Expansion | Shepherd's Bush | 205,000 mē retail space | Pro
Recent planning permission granted for phase 2 of Westfield Shepherds Bush.
The site is bounded by the shopping centre to the South and the Hammersmith City Line to the North. ![]() ![]() ![]() It consists of a 500,000 sq ft expansion of the Mall to the North with an additional 50,000 sq ft of restaurants (20 to 30 units) and some extra leisure and office with 1500 residential units. ![]() The scheme I feel is mostly successful in handling the transition from the monolithic shopping centre to a grid pattern of streets. To do this the shopping centre proceeds North over the access roads. Grand Staircases handle the transition to ground level. The shoppinng centre extension is cut in half between the new department store and supermarket (which I assume will be John Lewis and Waitrose) and the new retail units connecting it to the main centre. The new extension is wrapped in new flats so at least we don't end up with a big blank walls. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I like the parkland set against the rail viaduct. Over all I feel the plan allows for easy integration with land North of the viaduct. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Drawings look pretty promising. What's to become of the roundabout? Are they simply going to build over it?

The scheme will be in part similar to the Barbican, execpt it will step down around its edges. |

Any indication yet when construction is due to start and how long it will take?

Can someone overlay these plans onto an aerial map. Difficult to understand where the extra space is being taken from?
Cheers |

Looks like a good scheme and will smarten up the area north of the site.
If Waitrose are to be the supermarket, will they keep the one under House of Fraser open? |

The expansion would add 55,000 sq m of retail space to Westfield London, giving it a new total of 205,000 sq m...
That would make it larger than Westfield Stratford (175,000 sq m), and larger than the Trafford Centre (195,000 sq m), making it the largest shopping centre in the UK by retail space.

Correct stats are hard to come by... this is as official as I could find:
According to the respective owners' official websites: The Trafford Centre has 176,516 sq m of retail space. (Capital Shopping Centres - source) Westfield Stratford has 175,000 sq m of retail space. (Westfield - source) The MetroCentre has 173,862 sq m of retail space. (Capital Shopping Centres - source) Westfield London has 150,000 sq m of retail space. (Westfield - source) The Westfield London phase 2 would add 55,000 sq m of retail space, giving it 205,000 sq m.

As promising as those plans are, the cynic in me can't help but think we might be disappointed, after the value-engineered Westfield Stratford and the shelved Westfield Broadmarsh and Bradford.
