What Is your City Known For, Landmarks, Names, ETC.

Charlotte:

The Radio and News stations here always say "Queen City" or "QC" in reference to the nickname "The Queen City". Most companies use "Queen City" in their name like "Queen City Lighting" etc. Every street sign has the Charlotte crown and most Charlotte located events/clubs include a crown.

^ Even the Light Rail Electric Poles are decked with Crowns. Not talking about the sign with the crown

Charlotte wouldn't be Charlotte without US Airways buzzing around. Charlotte has the 4th largest airline hub with US. US Airways reminds me of Charlotte. As I'm sure probably people in Philadelphia get reminded of Phili when they see US.

The Hornets. Nothing reminds me of Charlotte more than the New Orleans Hornets.... Everytime I go to New Orleans, a Hornets sign in a bar catches my eyes.

Our most famous, I think, landmark. Bank of America Corp. I think Duke Energy is too new to be a staple of Charlotte. Though it really reshaped Charlotte from the skyline to the ground dramatically and psychologically.

This statue reminds me of Charlotte the most. Probably because I traveled a lot and that was the first thing You would see when coming out of the airport.

Edit:
Forgot to mention "uptown" . I think it drives everyone from every other city nuts when we say the word "uptown" ... But if you guys had it plastered all over signs, and event posters, the name of clubs, the name of a magazine, used by city officials, news, and radio people, ya'll would use it to. I think some out-of-towners think we say uptown just to emphasize we are from Charlotte or something when its really out of habit. Some locals hate the word to.

Great thread!

El Paso's known for boots, tacos, the big star on the mountain, and the ASARCO smokestack!

Gainesville, Ga. (aka, Chicken City)

Competes with the VA tidewater area for being the continent's top producer of processed chicken, and many industrial techniques for turning the birds into nuggets and such was developed here. The unofficial motto: "That chicken you're eating? We've touched it!"

It is a pretty decent little community with big potential for urban form, due to the excellent regional hospital, two local universities, Lake Lanier and the nearby mountains.

Not this Gainesville (maybe another one in the US), but Georgia in general has been big in the military, particularly Columbus, Brunswick and two bases on either side of Atlanta. The running joke about the fort in Columbus was that it was to protect us from Alabama! Which, come to think of it...

Tampa: Strip clubs and pawn stores. Seriously.

Otherwise I suppose proximity to the beaches, a great airport, cigars (Ybor city), and a decent cruise port.

Side note 1) Atlanta used to share the strip club mantra, as well. It's convention trade boomed in the 70's and 80's based on business shows where men LOVED to come alone. Now the city is trying to pull a Vegas and be all the more family friendly. (Thanks, online porn industry!)

Side note 2) I find it amazing that Jacksonville and Tampa/St. Pete haven't evolved into stronger beachfront vacation destinations. I don't know if it's the quality of the beaches themselves, the lack of stronger industry outside of tourism, or something else, but you'd think one or both would do a better job rivaling Miami for long-distance tourists. Instead even my family in NY knows Tamap is a "redneck hub for Hooters and strip clubs."

Then again, maybe that market is the most profitable for them?

I'd say Tampa/St. Pete does have a strong beachfront vacation market but it will never rival Miami. Part of the problem is Tampa/ St. Pete is filled with a lot of trash and rednecks in between the pockets of decent areas. We also have a lot of cheap retirees that oppose almost all changes so things stay the same.

Tampa/St. Pete beaches are gorgeous...they aren't known worldwide like Miami's, but they are beautiful nonetheless. I have never noticed an overabundance of rednecks on the beaches there, but maybe I just couldn't tell they were rednecks since they aren't dressed. The crowds seem pretty normal there to me. I haven't visited Jacksonville beaches as often, but I know there are some really nice ones there (Ponte Vedra, Amelia Island, etc.).

I guess just because they have a particular reputation in NY doesn't mean it's true? Every city has it's redneck contingent, and some people tend to confuse "southern" with redneck...but actually to see a large population of rednecks they should visit Daytona Beach. Maybe because Miami has more international visitors it has less of a redneck reputation with some people.

Atlanta still has more than it's fair share of strip clubs...one of the most famous is gone (Gold Club) but there are still some well-known ones (Cheetah, Magic City, Pink Pony, Tattletales, etc.) and there is definitely no shortage of them: http://atlantastripclub.com/

El Paso also has serious strip club cred owing to its status as a major trucking hub. When 18 wheelin' it through El Paso, be sure and stop by Excalibur. Tell 'em "Senor Don Juan de Alphonso" sent you!

Well the beaches are nice of course, you won't see that many rednecks until you drive inland lol.
