ILOÍLO | Ports and Shipping

Quote:
The Port of Iloilo serves the province and city of Iloilo and the entire Panay Island, in Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is located away from the older port facilities on the Southern coast of Panay Island, in the Panay Gulf.

Iloilo harbor is part of the Iloilo Strait bounded by imaginary lines at the north entrance from Dumangas River across the Iloilo Strait to Navalas Point on Guimaras Island and at the southern entrance by an imaginary line extending from the Lusaran Point, Guimaras Island to Surraga River in the municipality of San Joaquin Island of Panay. The shoreline of the two (2) islands define the limits of Iloilo Harbor.

History
The Port has been serving international shipping since at least 1855, handling sugar and fertilizer shipments for the international market. The opening of the Port of Iloilo to the world market in 1855 replaced the disappearing textile industry. The port gave local industry and agriculture a gateway to foreign markets. The sugar industry brought an economic boom to the city and its neighbor island, Negros, and Iloilo became the biggest center of commerce and trade in the Visayas and Mindanao, second only to Manila.

Port of Iloilo has five major ports within Iloilo Strait area.

Muelle Loney (Iloilo River Wharf)
The original wharf of Iloilo that served as a transhipment of sugar and other materials since 1855. Currently, it serves as a fastcraft port for Bacolod-bound ferries, domestic cargo shipment and others.

Muelle Loney and Customs House (Aduana)

Iloilo Domestic Port (Fort/Port San Pedro)
The Iloilo Domestic Port, formerly known as the Old Foreign Wharf, currently serves inter-island domestic passenger ferries and cargo vessels bound for Manila, Visayas and Mindanao. It is located beside the ruins of Fort San Pedro.

Iloilo International Port (Loboc Wharf)
This port facility currently is utilized mostly for bigger cargo for both domestic and international ships.

Lapuz Ro-Ro Wharf
Part of the Iloilo River Whaf, it serves Roll-on and off vessels for Guimaras and port of call for ferries bound for Puerto Princesa and Cuyo Islands in Palawan Provinces.

Dumangas-Naluoyan Wharf
This serves as the major Roll-on Roll-off port between Panay Island and Negros.

Please add more info about Port of Iloilo. Thanks!

Gov't to spend P500M for key ports upgrade
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MANILA, Feb. 20 (PNA) -- The Aquino administration is spending about P500 million to construct and upgrade existing berthing facilities in key ports in the country, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

“Together with the Philippine Ports Authority, we have identified key port areas in Iloilo, Ormoc and Tabaco where cargo handling capacities are projected to increase as a result of growing shipping activities in those areas,” DOTC Secretary Manuel A. Roxas told reporters on Monday.

These projects will improve port operations in terms of goods and passenger movements as well as foster a more productive, efficient, safe, secure and comfortable port experience.

“We are constructing additional 3,653 square meters of cargo handling space in the port of Tabaco, Albay. This will enable faster off-loading and boarding of cargoes,” Roxas said. The estimated cost of the project is P83.7 million.

The Iloilo Commercial Port Complex will also be upgraded by constructing additional 13,720 square meters of cargo handling space to accommodate the increased throughput arising from the closing down of berths along Iloilo River. The estimated cost is P307.6 million.

The government is also upgrading the Ormoc port where an additional back-up area of 3,791 square meters will be constructed, including a roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ramp to accommodate the projected increase in vessel traffic.

Ormoc port recorded 948 vessels traffic as of 2010. Currently, the Ormoc port can only accommodate 1,095 vessels.

It is projected that within five years, vessel traffic in the port will reach 1,533. The estimated project cost is P109.9 million. (PNA)

Prepared and published by the
NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (US Government)

Quote:
3.50 Iloilo (10°42'N., 122°35'E.) (World Port Index No.
59190), a first port of entry and an important shipping place,
stands on a low, sandy flat at the mouth of the Iloilo River on
the W side of Iloilo Strait.
3.50 Tides—Currents.—Tidal currents of 3 knots at strength for
both the rising tide and the falling tide may be experienced in
the Iloilo River. Abreast Iloilo Strait Wharf, the eddies are
strong and irregular on the rising tide.
3.50 Depths—Limitations.—The channel in the Iloilo River is
constantly shoaling and is maintained by dredging. The present
controlling depth is approximately 4.6m. Navigable widths in
the river are from 183m in the lower reaches to 23m at the
upper end.
3.50 Old Foreign Pier, immediately SW of the Iloilo River
entrance, is 500m long with a further proposed extension of

P300M for port of Iloilo

MANILA – Good news for the economy of Iloilo and Region 6. Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) announced yesterday the government’s plan to expand existing port facilities to address the increase in cargo handling and vessel traffic in the area.

Among the major beneficiaries will be the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex which will be upgraded with the construction of more than 13,000 square meters of cargo handling space to accommodate the increased throughput arising from the closing down of berths along the Iloilo River.

Roxas intends to infuse P307.6 million to complete the project.

The DOTC Secretary also announced the allocation of a total of P500 million to construct and upgrade existing berthing facilities in key ports in the country in line with the government’s thrust to provide reliable and responsive port services and sustain the development of the country’s port community.

“Together with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), we have identified key port areas in Iloilo, Ormoc and Tabaco where cargo handling capacity are projected to increase as a result of growing shipping activities in those areas,” Roxas said. “Lahat nang gagawing pagsasa-ayos sa mga nasabing daungan ay para dagdagan ang espasyo na kung saan mabilis na madidiskarga ang mga cargo na dumadating mula sa iba’t-ibang lugar.”

These projects would improve port operations in terms of goods and passenger movements, as well as foster a more productive, efficient, safe secure and comfortable port experience.

“We are constructing additional 3,653 square meters of cargo handling space in the port of Tabaco, Albay. This will enable faster off loading and boarding of cargoes,” Roxas said.

The estimated cost of the project is P83.7 million.

The government is also upgrading the Ormoc port where an additional back-up area of 3,791square meters will be constructed including a roll-on, roll off (RORO) ramp to accommodate the projected increase in vessel traffic.

Ormoc port recorded 948 vessels traffic as of 2010. Currently, the Ormoc port can only accommodate 1,095 vessels. It is projected that within five years, traffic vessel traffic in the port will reach 1,533.

The estimated project cost is P109.9 million./PN
