GUANGXI – Banking on their strategic locations, San Fernando City in La Union and the Clark Freeport Zone (CFZ) both placed their best foot forward in a bid to attract the attention of investors from China and other member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

San Fernando City and the CFZ were both chosen as the “Cities of Charm” from the Philippines in the 9th China-ASEAN four-day Expo that began on Sept. 21 in the city of Nanning.

San Fernando Mayor Pablo Ortega informed investor prospects in the “Investment Seminar-Business Opportunities in the Philippines” held at the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center (NICEC) on Saturday that their city’s location would suit the needs of investors and visiting tourists.

He said San Fernando is regarded as the “gateway to the North” and the “prime capital city of Ilocandia.”

San Fernando in La Union is the home of the Poro Point Freeport Zone (PPFZ) that can be easily accessed via land, air and sea. San Fernando’s seaport is already classified as “international” since it has been accommodating cruise ships, cargo vessels and barges in its pier.

The international seaport of PPFZ has a total land area of 30 hectares and with a possible reclamation area of over 100 hectares. It has three pier structures, six warehouses and open storage areas that are ideal for various types of cargo.

Ortega offered the city to the business community here.

“This is what we offer, fast emerging of development is the Poro Point Freeport Zone wherein a sizeable portion is surrounded by the West Philippine Sea,” he said.

He added San Fernando is blessed to be located 270 kilometers northwest of Metro Manila. From La Union, visitors could also access other tourist destinations of nearby provinces including Baguio, Vigan in Ilocos Sur, Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, and Pangasinan.

San Fernando City Councilor Joseph de Guzman said their efforts to promote tourism have been paying off because compared to three years ago, there has been about a 50-percent increase in the number of tourists.
“There are already a lot of Koreans in the city. There are also several Chinese businessmen who own small businesses,” he said.

One of the city’s biggest and latest attractions is the Thunderbird Resort that has a casino.

Among the time tested tourist attractions in San Fernando City are the 20-hectare botanical garden, the Ma-cho Temple, and the 25-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer at the Reservoir Hill.

It's been overdue that the seaport must have been developed. There are such very slim chances on redeveloping this seaport as of the moment

Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) has generated P56.597 billion in sales as of November this year from the sale of military properties since the agency’s creation.

BCDA president Arnel Casanova reported that bulk of the BCDA earnings come from the sale of Fort Bonifacio and Villamor Airbases.

For 2012 alone, the agency has generated P3.2 billion of which P2 billion have been earmarked for the Armed Forces modernization.

For next year, BCDA would be busy implementing most of its major undertakings after it has adopted a strategy for its remaining assets and as it embarks into new developments.

“Next year will be a banner year for BCDA,” he said.

Some of its projects include the Clark airport development, which is to fully utilize Clark into a intelligent city.

It will also finalize the feasibility study for the monorail project by January this year. The monorail will connect Global City, Makati, New Port and the airport.

The concept study has initially indicated a cost of P24 billion to P26 billion but Casanova said the project would be done under the Public Private Partnership scheme with BCDA as the main proponent.

The other option BCDA is looking at is to undertake the project through official development assistance financing.

The redevelopment is aimed at expanding the airport and developing a terminal.

In addition, BCDA will be redeveloping the San Fernando La Union airport in Poro Point to attract commercial flights operations into the tourist destinations in northern Luzon.

The airport redevelopment has involved the tourism operators in the area so they can guarantee passengers to airlines which would be asked to fly into San Fernando. At present, no airline flies to this airport.

In addition, BCDA expects to settle issues with Bulkhandlers Inc. to facilitate operations of the seaport in Poro Point.

“Floating book shop” arriving in San Fernando port

A ship which serves as an “ambassador of goodwill and international relations,” will arrive in San Fernando City and stay docked from May 22 to June 4, 2013, for the general public.

The vessel, named MV Logos Hope is following its predecessor, MV Doulos which visited San Fernando in 1996, 2000 and 2001. Logos ship is the newest vessel in the GBA fleet ships.

Originally functioning as a car ferry between Denmark and Faroe Islands, the said ship was purchased by GBA Ships in 2005 and converted into a floating book fair. Since 2008, it has sailed across the globe with the purpose of bringing “Knowledge, Help and Hope,” to the nations of the world.

A letter which has been sent to Mayor Pablo C. Ortega by Joanne Li, a Taiwanese project manager and permissions coordinator of the GBA Sips, said that the ship is scheduled for the public to see from May 23 to June 2, 2013.

“MV Logos Hope seeks to transform communities via practical help and actions of humanity. Over the past 40 years GBA Ships fleet has been warmly received in over 500 ports in more than 160 countries as the ship provides good educational literature and promotes unity in diversity. Our ships have also welcomed over 40 million visitors on-board,” Li wrote.

MV Logos Hope is operated as a non-profit international book fair and youth service project. It has a crew and staff of 400 people from around 45 different countries who serve as volunteers.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Apr 19 (PIA) -- The floating bookstore is back in the country and will sail on Ilocos shores beginning May 22.

The MV Logos Hope, which carries the world’s largest floating book fair, will remain at the San Fernando City port until June 4.

The floating bookstore, owned by Christian charity organization GBA ships, intends to bring knowledge, help, and hope to the people of the world.

The vessel serves as an ambassador of goodwill and international relations and is operated as a non-profit and youth service project.

MV Logos, said to be the newest vessel of the GBA fleet of ships, follows its predecessor MV Doulos which have sailed on separate occasions in 1996, 2000 and 2001.

The ship has been sailing from port to port since 2009 in its efforts of bringing knowledge to people of various races.

Joanne Li, Taiwanese project manager and coordinator of the GBA Ships, said that the vessel seeks to transform communities through practical help and humanitarian acts.

GBA Ships have sailed in over 500 ports in more than 160 countries worldwide and viewed by over 400 million visitors on board, Li added.

Li said local books from the ports they went to are also included but most of the books are English books. They usually visit the city of Manila which was visited 14 times and they have also visited Cebu City with an equivalent of 11 ship visits. This May 24 will be the first time that they will visit San Fernando, La Union.

Aside from the book fair, cultural events and conferences are also conducted inside the ship. According to the press release of Logos Hope, crew members get benefits from training programs conducted inside the ship in which they learn new skills and character building.

In a press release Logos Hope explained that these volunteers fill the different positions on the ship depending on their professional capacities like engineers, cooks, bookkeepers or electricians. Despite the cultural diversity, the crew members present unity as they work together to keep the ship successively active and aims to bring knowledge, help and hope to the community.

Operated by the GBA Ships, MV Logos Hope is open to the public from May 24 to June 2 at the Poro Point, PPIC Pier 2 of San Fernando, La Union. Li said that children may enter for free as long as there are adults with them. With an entrance fee of 20 pesos, the public will also experience the different facilities of the ship.

The ship will be open for the public during Mondays to Tuesdays from 2:00pm to 9:30pm, on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10:00am to 9:30pm and on Sundays from 1:00pm to 9:30pm.

Logos Hope has been sailing since February 2009 and received 40 million visitors from around 160 countries around the world. # nordis.net
