Carbonates:
Carbonates Well over 20 carbonates associated with Mesozoic-Cainozoic volcanics have been identified in the country which could prove to be useful source of rare earth elements, niobium and phosphates. source: Tanzanianews.com

Coal:
Coal Coal resources similar in quality to the Gondwana coals of southern Africa occur in the Ruhuhu and Songwe-Kiwira basins in the Southwest Tanzania. A total of about 1 .5 billion tonnes in reserves have so far been identified. The country’s only coal mine at Kiwira has an average annual output of 35,000 tonnes - all of which is consumed mostly locally for power generation. source: Tanzanianews.com new findings are mchuchuma and liganga coal mines

Industrial Minerals:
Industrial Minerals Limestone and dolomite-good resources of high purity occur in the white marble deposit of the Morogoro Region. Potential for dimension stone and refractory grade limestone is therefore excellent. A variety of clays - bentonite, kaolin and fullers earth - in size-able deposits have been identified and are only scantily exploited. The Pugu kaolin deposit located some 30 kms West of Dar es Salaam has a great potential for development. Evaporates and saline deposits of economic significance are associated with the rift valley lakes. Investigations of the Soda ash deposits at Lake Natron revealed a potential recovery of over one million tonnes a year. Currently, salt production stands at 105,000 tonnes per annum. Graphite occurs in high-grade gneisses mainly ion the Usagaran system. Sufficient reserve have been identified at Merelani, northern Tanzania, for a 40 year operation at a mining rate of 15,000 tonnes per year of high grade flake graphite of 97-98% purity. The mine will also producer Tanzanite, which occur in association with graphite. Phosphate deposits have been exploited at Minjingu in Arusha Region at around 48,000 tonnes per year in order to support fertiliser manufacturing. Following the closure of the fertiliser plant in Tanga, current production is mainly used for direct application. source: Tanzanianews.com

Tanzanite is a rare gem.
Tanzanite is a rare gem. Tanzanite is a rare gem. It is found mostly in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mineral is named after Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered. Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral zoisite (a calcium aluminium hydroxy silicate) which was discovered in the Mererani Hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967, near the city of Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro. It is used as a gemstone. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation. Tanzanite can also appear differently when viewed under alternate lighting conditions. The blues appear more evident when subjected to fluorescent light and the violet hues can be seen readily when viewed under incandescent illumination. Tanzanite in its rough state is usually a reddish brown color. It requires artificial heat treatment to 600 °C in a gemological oven to bring out the blue violet of the stone.

Sapphires
Sapphires Tanzania obtains much of its gem wealth from a geological feature known as the Mozambique Orogenic Belt, which contains one of the richest gem loads on earth. The Belt runs in a north-south direction through the eastern part of the country and it is up to 300 kilometers wide in places. The rocks in this mountain belt have undergone significant tectonism and metamorphism, which has created a multitude of gemstones, including sapphires. The majority of the sapphires from Tanzania are found in three locales: the Umba River Valley in the north, and Tunduru and Songea in the south. more info:thenaturalsapphirecompany.com In the last year we've been listing some unheated sapphire from Tanzania at very attractive prices. Since unheated sapphire is hard to find -- not to mention rather expensive -- these Tanzanian sapphires have proven to be very popular.

Tsavorite
Tsavorite Tsavorite, also known by its European name "tsavolite," is an extremely rare variety of grossularite, that was first discovered near Komolo, in the Merelani Hills, approximately 50km southeast of Arusha, Tanzania. A British geologist named Campbell Bridges identified the first specimen of tsavorite in 1967. more info on tsavolite: allaboutgemstones.com

Peridot
PERIDOT Peridot from a new locality, Tanzania, is described and compared with 13 other peridots from various localities in terms of color and chemical composition. The Tanzanian specimen is lower in iron content than all but the Norwegian peridots and is very similar to material from Zabargad, Egypt. A gem-quality enstatite that came from the same area in East Africa and with which Tanzanian peridot has been confused is also described. Spinels
Spinel is usually formed as a contract metamorphic mineral in limestone. It is discovered as rolled pebbles in sand and gravel pits. Spinel today is mined primarily in Burma, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Tadjikistan, often along side corundum (ruby and sapphire). Large stones are very rare; a ten carat sized Burmese spinel is practically nonexistent. Most of the Burmese spinel is under 2 carats, but we do see some larger spinel from Tanzania. more info: gemselect.com Rare large spinels from Mahenge, Tanzania A remarkable discovery in Mahenge, Tanzania has produced an amazing selection of exceptionally large, clean, and highly saturated red spinels from one crystal. more info: www.spinel.cc
