I've been resisting bringing up the naked man and boy fountain at the sculpture park as I think that is clearly way more gay of tourist attraction than the civil and mechanical engineering marvel that is the Great Wheel.
I was trying to think of what I would consider a gay tourist attraction after Joos' initial remark on the topic.Edit: I guess there could be a big difference between gay tourist attraction and gayest tourist attraction. The former might be attractive to gays and the latter might be what a general audience would consider gay by whatever standard they choose. Last edited by Seasun; June 26th, 2012 at 05:58 PM. |

Most seem to equate the two. There's a therapy session in there somewhere.

That's why I avoided the fountain reference as I find it odd to say the least (and that's as a gay guy) plus it just gets this thread further off topic. But I was just imaging Joos being photographed hugging the man (minus the boy!)

Okay, so I through some fuel on the fire with the whole gay attraction thing, and quite honestly, from how the contributors have conducted themselves in past discussions, I haven't taken offense and I've felt okay with jumping in with my own joke. From my perspective:Nothing to see here.

When I used the word " Gayest "
It was not to degrade a certain type of people or to bash any group, I used in the sense that it is gay considering that it will be nothing more than a big light show catering to mostly those NOT local to here. You guys for whatever reason decided to run with it, NOT my fault but come on now, cut me some slack ok ? |

Correction: Bigotry is alive and well. The eloquence and length of response does not change the facts.
Since the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, the litmus test of discrimination has never relied on the "good" or "innocent" intentions of the sender but rather the way that the group which receives (the aggrieved class). Just note the case of the Sambos restaurant chain...African-Americans were deeply offended by the name whereas the caucasian owners seen no fault in the name. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo's#section_1 Your crude jokes have an offensive ring, maybe you can consult your companys human resources manager if you need sensitivity coaching. |

gay as an adjective
Using the word "gay" as akin to lame, crap, etc is insulting to many in our community. You should be ashamed of yourself.

My apologies then Yet you and maybe one or two other members are taking massive offense to it, If I had know a small joke no matter how offensive or derogatory YOU may feel it is, it was nothing more than a playful jab and I find it offensive that some people like yourself can't even see beyond the fact that it was a poorly directed joke..... God forbid, you make a joke about straight people only to be ridiculed endlessly about it. Next time you or anyone takes offense to anything I say, please PM me first instead of airing your disgust for me b/c I choose to make light of a situation or use a CERTAIN word to describe a ( NOUN )..... This is why the GAY community has a hard time being taken seriously, it's be/c certain people within the community are too busy being worried about being offended in the smallest sense that all their energy is being focused on being angry or offended. I get it, you're mad, I apologized, it's done and over with, I will try to be more civilized to YOUR SPECIFIC needs as it's very apparent that you can't laugh @ yourself or anything else..... Enjoy being angry.... Peace, I'm fucking out!!!! |

You missed the whole point. There is little gained if subtle discrimination is not noted. You're probably a nice person in real life. That's not the issue.
There is a television public service message campaign ongoing on subtle homophobia....using the word gay as a perjorative is not playful but hurtful. People on this board should understand that rather than you get a PM which does not tell others that fact. |

For those who haven't seen what the wheel can do at night...Joos has a point.
Also UW: offense is being taken, not given. I find your sense of entitlement offensive, ironically, but I wouldn't say anything about it ordinarily. |

Making jokes about sexual orientation, gender, or race, no matter how subtle or inoffensive you may think you are being, is almost always in poor taste. And almost always certain to offend someone. Just don't do it.
A good rule of thumb: before you say something to a group of people on the Internet, imagine instead that you are all seated around a table and you are saying it over dinner. How would it go over? I'm gay, and I'm not usually offended by comments like "haha rainbow colors how gay", but I do find it childish. Last edited by seattleist; June 26th, 2012 at 10:52 PM. |
