DPRK's Air Koryo to open Pyongyang, Harbin charter flight

HARBIN, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Air Koryo of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will launch a charter flight route between Pyongyang and the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin on April 27, local Chinese airport authorities said Friday.

The airline will offer a round-trip flight between the cities every Monday and Friday, a spokesman with the Heilongjiang Provincial Airport Group Management Co. Ltd. said.

The new service will meet the travel demands of nationals from both countries, the spokesman said.

Harbin, known as China's "Ice City," is the capital of Heilongjiang Province, which borders Russia.

Doesnt Air Koryo have only 1 Tu 204?

They have a tiny fleet.

Air Koryo's Older Fleet Barred From China

Air Koryo was banned from entering European airspace in 2006 due to its poor safety credentials, but now its main destination China has also followed suit. Moving forward, the North Korean airline will be obliged to replace several aircraft types on its Sino-DPRK services or cease running some flights all together. As a result of the new rules, Air Koryo will be retiring decades old Soviet-era Tupolev and Ilyushin planes on routes into and out of China, replacing them completely with a modern fleet of expensive Russian jets.

They will get (or already have) a factory new Antonov An-148 this month, they lease it from Ilyushin Finance Co. With the Chinese decision it probably means that they will receive more of them.

Air Koryo will have to add more TU-204 and possibly the IL-96 in the near future...

A IL96 makes no business sense for JS.

Same with me. Sure, the Il-62 doesn't have the best track record, but it really is the only truly classic Soviet airliner still flying today.

but they can still use it around NK right?? AFAIK, they do aviation tours around the country using those soviet classics--even allowing visitors to ride on an ilyushin cargo plane...
