North Korea to restart domestic scheduled flights as tourism grows

SEOUL, July 3 (Reuters) - North Korea will reopen some of its domestic scheduled air routes for the first time in years, a China-based tour operator said on Thursday, another sign of moves to bolster tourism in the isolated country.

North Korea suffers from chronic fuel shortages, but has imported large quantities of jet fuel and gasoline from China in the first five months of this year, according to data compiled by Reuters.

"Regular flights like this have not been scheduled before - at least not in the six years we've been doing this," said Troy Collings of Young Pioneer Tours, a China-based company that specialises in taking Western tourists to North Korea.

North Korea's national airline Air Koryo will start operating the flights from mid-July, Collings said.

Foreign tourists have previously had to charter ageing Soviet-era planes to fly between cities which can take up to two days to reach by rail or road.

The vast majority of tourists to North Korea are from China, with 237,000 visitors from the country in 2012, nearly double the level from 2010, according to Chinese data.

While North Korea does not publish tourist numbers, travel agencies estimate as many as 6,000 Westerners visit North Korea every year, compared to just 700 a decade ago. Most are adventure-seekers curious about life in the authoritarian state, and ignore critics who say their dollars are propping up a repressive regime.

Like the country's sprawling railroad network, the flights will likely be open to local officials and North Koreans with work or business interests in other cities.

North Korea has stepped up investment in tourism infrastructure under Kim Jong Un, who took power in 2011 when his father Kim Jong Il died, including the construction of a new ski resort near the country's east coast and waterparks in the capital, Pyongyang.

North Koreans require a state-issued travel permit to travel internally, although those with money are able to bribe their way on or off trains and through internal checkpoints between rural provinces.

Pyongyang linked with regular flights
Shanghai Daily Excerpt
April 28, 2015

RECLUSIVE Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is welcoming tourists from China with regular flights linking Shanghai with Pyongyang.

There are now two flights operated by DPRK’s Air Koryo per week from Pudong International Airport.

Each flight can carry 176 passengers. Previously, chartered flights were used for trips to North Korea but as demand grew Air Koryo added regular flights to and fro from the city.

Last year, chartered flights between Shanghai and Pyongyang were operated for only three months in July, August and September.

Two Shanghai-based travel agencies that organize trips to DPRK said tour packages for the May Day holiday were nearly sold out.

Those are not my photos, but I did fly them recently. The flight attendants were attentive and service was good. The Tupolev is actually quite new and not an aged jet at all.

NKorean airliner catches fire, makes forced landing in China
Associated Press Excerpt
July 22, 2016

BEIJING (AP) — An airliner operated by North Korea's flag carrier caught fire and made an emergency landing in northeastern China on Friday, an airport police official said.

The Air Koryo flight was en route from the North Korean capital of Pyongyang to Beijing when it made the unscheduled stop in the Chinese city of Shenyang, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing a passenger on board the plane.

An official with the Shenyang Taoyuan Airport police unit, reached by phone, said the plane landed at around 9 a.m. local time. Like many Chinese officials, he refused to provide his name and said he had no further details.

Air Koryo operates mainly Russian TU-204 and AN-148 planes. The international destinations to which it flies regularly include Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang in China and the Russian port of Vladivostok.

Calls to the airline's office in Beijing rang unanswered.

Xinhua cited the unidentified passenger as saying that smoke began to appear in the cabin around half an hour after the plane took off from Pyongyang. The report said the crew told passengers the plane would make a stop in Shenyang and urged them not to panic. It said oxygen masks were released and the plane made a forced landing in Shenyang 10 minutes later.

That particular An-148 was designed and assembled in Kyiv, Ukraine.
