The African Sahel | Gallery | Its peoples, cultures and landcapes

The Sahel is the ecoclimatic and biogeographic zone of transition between the Sahara desert in the North and the Sudanian Savannas in the south. It stretches across the north of the African continent between the Atlantic Ocean and the Nile River. The Arabic word sāḥil ساحل literally means "shore, coast", describing the appearance of the vegetation of the Sahel as a coastline delimiting the sand of the Sahara.

The traditional Sahel covers parts of the territory of (from west to east) Senegal, southern Mauritania, most of Mali, northern Burkina Faso, most of Niger, northern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, middle belt of Chad, (some include Southern Algeria, parts of Sudan see Darfur). In these countries the Sahel has attracted a population as varied as its environment. Some are semi-nomadic cattle herders, moving with the seasonal flooding of the Niger or Senegal River for ex. Others are farmers, making out a living from millet and sorghum. The border with the Sahara and the Sudanic zone is fluid and many of the people found in one region can be found in the other. But many groups owe their culture strictly to the Sahel.

Over the history of the Western Sudan region the region has been home to some of the most advanced kingdoms benefiting from trade across the desert. Collectively these states are known as the Sahelian kingdoms. The historical Western Sudan had no fixed geopolitical boundaries or singular ethnic or national identities.Consequently historical Western Sudan overlaps in culture, history and ethnicities with the core Sahel. The Sahel states were limited from expanding south into the forest zone of the Ashanti and Yoruba as mounted warriors were all but useless in the forests and the horses and camels could not survive the heat and diseases of the region.

General information:
• Ethnic Groups : Wolof, Hausa, Fulani, Songhay, Daza, Soninke, Mossi, Malinke, Kanuri, Zaghawa, Bambara and many more
• Major languages: Songhay, Soninké, , Bambara, Hausa, Arabic, Fulani, Malinké, Wolof, Moré, Zarma and many more
• Major religion: Islam

If you have nice pictures of The Sahel, you are welcome to post them here.
