It's only normal to compare and comment on which one is greatly lacking, or overabundant between the two.
But it's also being said by forum members here. It's safe to assume that most of us here at SSC are not in extreme poverty or have not been 10km past his home. For us SSC members, there should be no reason to be saying such things because we are aware of the Philippines' progress through the Internet, the news, etc.

There's an inferiority complex in a lot of Filipino, and this phrase is a good example of it. All I'm saying is that perhaps to get rid of this mentality, how about we change our outlook. One way to start is to stop saying things that disacknowledge the nation's progress. How about we say "that is a world class project in the Philippines" or even better like chocolato1000 suggested "ang ganda ng Philippines!"

It is up to any individual in the Philippines to say how they feel about the economy. If we change our attitude or outlook on the way we really see things especially those coming from the media that we are really getting into better economy, then we could be in denial on those that other see otherwise.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Each one will view the Philippines' progress through their own eyes and their perception of it will form their own varied opinions. Others will see the glass as half empty, others will see it as half full. More often than not, whenever a person utters "Wow! Parang hindi Pilipinas!" only means that they are pleasantly surprised at the progress made and are in awe of the achievements attained. That isn't a derogatory statement, but one of positivity, and how one can gauge what has been done in comparison to other places that have established and positioned themselves ahead of the game.

You also have to consider that the Philippines is playing catch up to it's neighbors in the region and with others in the industrialized world, and it is in no means the leader of the pack when it comes to these things. So it's only fair that when someone utters a statement like that it's because they have seen it done in other nations before. As I've said, comparisons will always be in play, and statements like that will proliferate ad infinitum until the Philippines has/have surpassed other nations in terms of economic growth, science and technology breakthroughs, etc. Then and only then, maybe, you'll hear that same statement the other way around by foreigners marveling at what we have achieved.
