Great news, that'll make that intersection even more spectacular.

And I see that the Buildings among the skyline are supposed to mimic Mt. Fuji, which is very interesting.

Good news! I'm surprised there is space around there for two large towers, it seemed fairly dense and developed when I was there last year.

I find it amazing that even though NYC's Manhattan is very dense, compared to Tokyo it looks like a wheatfield.

There are some points, the name isn't officially Twin Tower Shibuya although it fits going here.

I would call it:

"Shibuya Station District Redevelopment"

As you can see on the picture the twin towers won't be only new towers that will go up around the station.

The twin towers are:

Shibuya Station New Station building East Tower | 250m | Pro (white in the picture)

Shibuya Station New Station building West Tower | 210m | Pro (white)

Both towers will be become the main station building, with the main gate to the platforms of the Yamanote Line, and the Saikyo Line & Shonan-Shinjuku Line. There will also be new shops in the building and the towers will be offices.

Start of construction will be in 2015.

~~~~~~
The other towers:
Shibuya Station South Block Redevelopment | 180m | Pro (blue)
This will be a new office tower just south of the new station building on the other side of the elevated road. The site will become available when the Tokyo Toyoku Line Shibuya station will closed down as it will be connected with the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line in the underground station that was opened a few years ago.
~~~~~~

Dogenzaka 1-chome Station Front Redevelopment | 160m | Pro (green)

This will be the redevelopment of the Tokyu Plaza department store, start of construction will be 2014.

~~~~~~
Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka Entrance Block Redevelopment | 140m | Pro (purple)
Right next to the Shibuya Station South Block Redevelopment on the west side of the JR line. This will be mixed used with atleast 1 140m tall tower plus other buildings. This could only be the only residential tower in the whole project. Start of construction 2015.
~~~~~~

And in January the redevelopment of the Tokyu Toyoko Department Store that is also part of the Shibuya Station complex was announced. According to the news it would redeveloped into a new tower that is comparable to the 183m high Shibuya Hikarie Tower that will be completed next month (grey tower in the top right corner in the picture above. But now it doesn't appear anymore in the most recent article.

Tokyu Toyoko Store Rebuilding | ?m | Pro

There will be a new department store on the same location, there could be a new office tower on top of it. Start of construction will be 2014 and it should be finished in 2018. By then the other Tokyu department stores at the station, on the west side of the station will also be redeveloped.

The pictures again on a different host.

My proposal for a thread title.

TOKYO | Shibuya Station District Redevelopment | 250m | 210m | 180m | 160m | 140m | Pro

The status is definitely not yet Prep, although there is already work going on around the station there is still need for the demolition of many old buildings before this could be considered Prep. There's also nowhere a mention of the 60 floors, it's to many floors for the height anyway for a typical office tower in Tokyo especially with the station at the base.

Hello again,
Thank you for the point Momo, you're totally right.

Now, I have a question about this, out of curiosity:

Are you sure that it's not included in the masterplan? The Tokyu toyoko store is part of the actual station building, on the east side of it, am I right?
I get the impression that the 250m. tower will be on that spot.

I'm not sure at all.

I'm just confused that the January article explicitly mentioned a rebuilding project of the Toyoko department store and now it there's no mention of that info in the new article (from the same news site). And the Toyoko store is located on the north of the Ginza Line Station, the new towers that will be the station building are south of the Ginza Line tracks. This leaves room on the current location, but the original plans show no building there any more. It will be new bus station / station square, but that could have changed in the meantime.

We have to wait until more detailed plans come out, with the exact locations of all the buildings.

The masterplan from June 2009 for the station and direct surroundings can be seen here:

Yes, there was some big news as 1 of the 2 main towers that was cancelled and the other one had it's height reduced.

The height reduction was not the biggest change since there will now be only 1 tower and not 2. The 210m high West Tower has been scrapped from the plan and is replaced by a 76m tall tower that is just 15m higher then the rest of the base building.

TOKYO 東京 | Shibuya Station New Station building East Tower 渋谷駅街区 新駅ビル東棟 | 230m | Pro

stats:
height: 210m
floors: 43
use: Station, Shops, Offices.
status: Project.
start: 2013 (construction 2015)
complete: 2020 (the East Tower), 2027 (other buildings)

Location:
Shibuya 2-Chome, Shibuya-ku

I think this reduction is mainly because of the current state of the office market. With the high vacancy numbers the developers are playing safe outside of the core office areas including Shibuya.

The renders for 3 of the towers in this whole redevelopment where published today.

Birdseye view

JR East press release:

http://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2012/20130106.pdf

height: 230m

status: Project.
start: 2013 (construction 2015)
complete: 2020 (the East Tower), 2027 (other buildings)

View from the Shibuya crossing.

I didn't post some news about the redevelopment of the Tokyo plaza (see 道玄坂地区 in the 1st picture) that came out last month since it was also subject to a height reduction from 160m to 120m. Today's separate press release shows a new render.

The 3rd tower is still planned to become 180m tall, there was a separate press release for this tower.

TOKYO 東京 | Shibuya Station South Block Redevelopment 渋谷駅南街区再開発 | 180m | Pro

stats:
height: 180m

There was no news for the other tower in this project.

TOKYO 東京 | Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka Entrance Block Redevelopment 渋谷駅桜丘口街区再開発 | 140m | Pro

But the Birdseye View image shows that there will most likely 2 towers on both sides of the redevelopment area.

The south tower looks the best. The other one is quite bulky, although that's not unusual in Tokyo.

JR East released a nice press release pdf concerning the final approval and the split of the complete project into 3 different smaller projects, the 3 towers that are now planned.

http://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2013/20130614.pdf

New renders

The new station entrance.

There will also be big changes underground, a better connection is planned between the deep station of the Tokyu Toyoko Line and Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line and the JR station.

The architect of the main tower is SANAA.

A construction sign for the South Block tower has appeared at the site and some people are not going to like it. The tower will be 10 meters shorter then previously announced, just 169.35m. The actual construction will start October next year.
