Singapore Malays have own identity

SINGAPORE, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The Malays in Singapore have developed their own distinct identity and are different from the Malays in Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, according to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Speaking at his annual National Day rally Sunday night, in Malay, Mandarin and English, at the University Cultural Centre here, Lee said when they were abroad they wanted to be identified as Singaporeans first.

He said Singapore Malays were able to retain their roots, culture and religion although they had to adapt their lifestyle to changes in the socio-economic and political spheres and had to face many challenges in the ever-changing city-state.

He said the community resolved to become stronger instead of feeling dispirited and psychologically "under siege", it reached out to engage other communities instead of withdrawing, and adopted an open and adaptive approach instead of becoming confrontational.

The prime minister noted how the Malay Muslim community here reacted differently compared with other Muslim communities elsewhere to the Sept 11 terror attacks in New York by immediately condemning the act of terror.

Lee also said Singaporeans should not take religious and racial harmony for granted as it would continue to play an important role in Singapore's society.

He said Singaporeans who came from different racial and religious backgrounds had enjoyed peace and harmony over the past 40 years.

"I understand other religions have different doctrines and may not all interact in the same way. But more important is the spirit and sincerity of interaction among the religions." The prime minister said to keep Singapore peaceful, all groups must be tolerant, religion and politics must stay separate, government must stay secular and common space for all the people must be preserved.

Lee said there was now increasing religious fervour in many countries such as the United States, Iran, Indonesia and Malaysia, but in Singapore it should be managed so as not to allow it to come in the way of peace.

He said Singaporeans should avoid three factors that could tear the fabric of the population, which were aggressive preaching, intolerance and exclusiveness. (BERNAMA)

Yaa Singapore..! Wait for me Mujahiddin, i'll be there soon
Singapore is a clean country. The gov doesn't allow durians to be plant there because of the smell. Every year when the durians seasons come, thousands of Singaporean come across the Strait of Johor just for durians.

Chirofit plans to expand into Singapore, Dubai

The Nation Published on August 20, 2009

Chirofit Chiropractic Clinic plans to enter Singapore and Dubai next year by forming local partnerships.

"This is my intention to expand the business overseas. We piloted Chirofit Chiropractic and Fitness four years ago in Thong Lor. This kind of medical science, which is aimed at balancing the body structure for the most effective functioning, is gradually getting recognised and the Singaporean investor is interested in operating this clinic in Singapore," managing director Montanat Rojjanasrirat said yesterday.

The company and its local partners in Singapore and Dubai are conducting market surveys with the view to establishing chiropractic clinics possibly next year, when the world's economy is expected to stabilise.

The cost for opening a clinic, for example in Singapore, is about Bt100 million, which would be shared with the local partner.

Neither Dubai nor Singapore has any comprehensive chiropractic clinics.

Montanat, a chiropractor who founded the clinic, also plans to grow his business within the country by setting up three clinics in major cities next year and a specialised chiropractic hospital in three to five years.

Montanat currently has two locations in the Sukhumvit area. The Chirofit Chiropractic and Fitness in the Home Place Building on Soi Thong Lor was recently reduced to just a fitness centre, while the Chirofit Chiropractic Clinic in the Bangkok Mediplex Building on Soi Ekamai has become a fully integrated chiropractic clinic.

The Ekamai clinic has just completed a Bt100-million second-phase expansion to 600 square metres from 250 square metres to provide space for specific diagnosis rooms, private massage rooms and a spacious area for therapeutic exercise.

Before treatment, patients are submitted to a diagnosis for the balance of body structure, bone mineral density and muscle rigidity.

The expansion made the Ekamai clinic the most complete chiropractic centre in the country.

The number of clients there is expected to increase to 120-150 per month from 80-100 at present, helping the centre to achieve Bt80 million-Bt100 million in revenue this year.

"The Ekamai clinic generated revenue of Bt30 million in the first half of this year, up 200 per cent from the same period last year. It indicates that people recognise such an alternative medical science more. So, I think it's a good time to expand the second phase at Ekamai and we have a chance to go overseas, as well," he added.

Singapore's Temasek downplays its strategic state role

SINGAPORE, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Singapore state investor Temasek downplayed its links to government policy or strategic interests in a revised charter issued on Tuesday, as it eyes more overseas assets from banks to infrastructure.

Temasek, one of the world's biggest wealth funds whose sole shareholder is the Singapore government, still has controlling stakes in half the city-state's blue-chip firms such as Singapore Airlines, but it has increased its exposure elsewhere.

Sovereign wealth funds have come under greater scrutiny from Western governments concerned that their investments may be politically motivated, after their high-profile acquisitions.

CEO Ho Ching said Temasek will still consider taking stakes in Western financials, despite the firm's estimated $4 billion-plus losses after it sold off its stakes in Bank of America and Barclays in the past year.

"If the opportunity comes, and it looks attractive, yes," Ho said, adding that the fund was also interested in resources as an asset class and saw opportunities in Asian infrastructure.

She, however, ruled out investing in overseas land for agriculture, as firms linked to South Korea and Middle Eastern firms have done in recent years.

Ho was speaking at the launch of an updated charter that described the fund as an investment firm managed on commercial principles, dropping a reference to its role to improve the city-state's economic base.

"Temasek felt the need to emphasise its independence, or perhaps it is preparing to spin itself off as a truly independent unit...Countries are resistant to investments by politically-linked entities," said David Cohen, director of Asian economic forecasting at Action Economics in Singapore.

China Investment Corp (CIC), the $200 billion sovereign fund, has repeatedly assured Western nations and investors that it will become more transparent in its operations and investments amid growing concerns about Beijing's political motives, and last month published its first annual results report.

The role of wealth funds around the world, which oversee about $3 trillion in assets, changed from a key source of capital for struggling Western banks early in the crisis, to governments redeploying funds to stabilise their home markets this year.

Tawandang branches into Singapore

THE NATION Published on September 10, 2009

After operating microbrewery restaurants for 10 years in Thailand, Tawandang Brew House has ventured into Singapore with the opening of the Bt100-million Tawandang German Brewery in June and a branch planned for later this year.

"We're quite confident in our readiness to expand our microbrewery restaurants abroad especially to Asian countries. We have a good business model, know-how and strong personnel. We're looking for opportunities in many cities such as Shanghai, Hanoi, Taipei and Guangzhou," managing director Supote Teerawattanachai said yesterday.

The single-floor restaurant on Dempsey Road with 350-400 seats occupies 750 square metres, including the microbrewery capable of producing 1,000 litres of beer per batch.

The branch would open in two months on the East Coast with 600sm of space on two floors and 250 seats.

It would need only Bt30 million-Bt40 million in investment as all beer products, including lager, dunkel and weizen, will be supplied by the microbrewery in the Dempsey outlet.

The overseas expansion was made by the existing shareholders and management team led by Sathien Setthasit, chairman of Tawandang Brew House, Nutchamai Thanombooncharoen, a director, and Supote.

They would proceed through various investment options, including joint ventures with local partners and direct investment by the company.

In Bangkok, the company runs Tawandang German Brewery restaurants on Rama III and Ram-Indra roads with 1,200 and 2,000 seats, respectively.

Supote attributed Tawandang Brewery's decade-long success to its unique character, signature dishes and drinks, constantly evolving live performances and friendly vibes.

"We expect to achieve Bt350 million in sales this year, which is stagnant compared to last year. What we are trying to do is to reduce our operating costs as well as raise service quality.

"While the number of customers dropped significantly along with the economic and political difficulties, we found that their average spending was up by 10 per cent to about Bt600," he said.

The economic and political situations here have discouraged any new investment possibilities, so the company would focus more on expanding abroad instead, he said.

The company had designed its own business model called "Asian Style MicroBrewery" for the overseas push.

It applies all restaurant concepts and signature dishes, such as deep fried pork knuckle served with spicy sauce, tom yum soup with king prawns and coconut milk, and 60 modern Thai seafood items.

"This crisis will prove to be our golden opportunity - expanding the business to outside of Thailand and into the Asian market where the trend is positive.

We do think Asia is a tempting market to invest in and we're ready to mobilise the funds and send in the professional team," Supote added.
