To me this building feels like a filler. It's not really going to revolutionize this area of the city like the Tokyo Sky Tree did.

You need one hell of a tower to get the same effect as the Tokyo Sky Tree. So yes, this is a filler and just one of the new towers are going and will go up in the next few years in the Otemachi District.
This weekend ![]() http://urbanreallife.blog52.fc2.com/ The facade mock-up in the picture is for this tower: TOKYO 東京 | Mitsui Sumitomo Bank East Building Plan 三井住友銀行本店東館計画 | 150m | U/C http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1480687 |

For the Japanese section I made a map with the current and upcoming redevelopments and the other projects that we might see in the near future in Otemachi. It might be interesting to post it here as well. This project is #3 on the map.
![]() Completed 1. Otemachi Chain redevelopment 1st phase: JA Building (180m) Nikkei Building (155m) Keidanren Kaikan (122m) Under Construction 2. Otemachi Chain redevelopment 2nd phase: Otemachi Financial City (177m & 154m) 3. Otemachi 1-6 plan (200m) 4. Yomiuri Newspaper Tokyo Head Office Building Future developments 5. Otemachi 1-1 Plan (150m & 115m) status: demolition 6. & 7. Otemachi Chain redevelopment 3rd phase status: in development, up for demolition (Time frame: around 2015) 8. Tokiwabashi area Redevelopment status: up for planning decision on the redevelopment (Time frame: 2018 and after) Future developments, status unknown 9. Japan Meteorological Agency Complex status: A new building for the JMA is planned for construction in Toranomon, but that hasn't started yet therefor the planned completion in 2013 is uncertain. The Otemachi complex will be redeveloped afterwards, but as long there's no activity in Toranomon it remains unclear what will happen. 10. Shin Otemachi Building + neighbouring buildings Constructed in 1958, owned by Mitsubishi. It's an old low rise office building, it would be a logical redevelopment. 11. Premium Head Office Building Bought last year by Mitsui. This building could be redeveloped on it's own or together with the Mitsui Bussan Building (1974) right next to it on the park side. 12. Otemachi Building Constructed in 1958, owned by Mitsubishi. This is the long building right in the middle of Otemachi, it could be redeveloped as 2 or 3 new towers. In the future developments there could be some 200m high towers, but no supertalls or anything well above the 210m. |

Otemachi, together with Marunouchi is part of Tokyo's main Central Business District around Tokyo Station. The financial companies all have their offices in this area
Shiodome and Shinjuku are 2 other main business districts, but are less important then this area. Ikebukuro only has the Sunshine 60 tower and some residential towers. It's not really a business area, it's more one of the main shopping areas. ~~~~~~ Here's a picture from 07/09 that shows a different angle and the current height. It's just over 170m right now. image hosted on flickr ![]() mood TOKYO from Mandarin Oriental Tokyo Premier Grand Room by norio.nakayama, on Flickr by night image hosted on flickr ![]() Night City from Mandarin Oriental Tokyo Premier Grand Room by norio.nakayama, on Flickr |

The tower is now around 190m tall.
The trees are Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii). |
