Last update from the Japanese section.

The tower is U/C but it's hasn't risen above ground level yet.

For an economy that basically isn't growing anymore since a decade, Japan really builds a staggering amount of new skyscrapers.

I just wish they would be a little more creative with the designs once in a while.

Perhaps they are starting to realise that in order to grow more, they need to expand the floorspace of their crowded cities?

Another box for Tokyo. Why such dull designs, is the box-structure safest against earthquakes? I wish the Japanese could be as imaginative in their architecture as they are in other areas like video games, movies etc.

The market is the cause for the boxy designs. Fancy buildings don't make money, big uniform office floors do in the Tokyo office market.

As for the demand for office space, until the global financial crisis the office vacancy rates where extremely low, it even dropped under 2% in 2007 and even under 1% in this part of the city. All the plans for these new office towers come from this time when there simply was a big demand for new office space. Now the vacancy rates are up to 9%, but they are stable. The levels of earthquake resistance are also an issue. It's not like the old buildings are unsafe, but the new buildings are safer because of the better construction methods with better earthquake resistance measures. There's still room in the market for more new office space, and the numerous new developments that will start in the next few years are clear sign of that.

btw, it should be known that if you're looking for imaginative Japanese architecture you should look at the many interesting low rise buildings in Tokyo and other Japanese cities.

Sort of reminds me of the Federation of Korean Industries head office building being built in Seoul, although it's interesting that this is for a newspaper company. I guess the industry must not be dying in Japan the way it is in the U.S.

Japanese newspapers are huge, by far the biggest in the world when it comes to the number of printed copies. It's also a declining business in Japan although not as bad as in the US. And even with a smaller circulation the Yomiuri Group is still huge and can easily fill a tower like this. And it's not just a newspaper, the group owns TV stations, a big publishing company, the biggest Baseball team in Japan and even a popular amusement park among other things.

Just curious...considering the amount of new office towers that were built in Otemachi in recent years, I'm wondering whether it already overtook Shinjuku when it comes to the amount of total office floor space?

Do you think Tokyo will ever get a supertall building?
Are there any height limits in Tokyo or restrictions in heigh due to earthquakes?
