Just to confirm as I think shard97 got a bit confused with the new Foot Anstey building - the Oceanique tower is going to be where the old Foot Anstey office was - just off Derry's Cross.
See map below.....

I've finally been able to track down the planning application too... had to search for Devington Homes instead of by address....
Oceanique Planning Application

Also, just looking at the planning applications, there's a refusal for an extension of time on this site.
Not sure what exactly it refers to.... if it means they'll have to re-apply for permission for the tower, or if it's just referring to the temporary car park.

Would anyone mind popping down to 33 Derrys Cross to get some snaps?

Just found this:

Plain, Stick a cluster in the City Centre and I would be happy.

Just been looking at the planning applications, and i have seen that they are demolishing the flats at Ker Street in Devonport, to make way for public spaces and new streets.

It hasn't changed a lot recently - I did post a picture of the site a few months back, and I don't think it's changed at all.
I've got exams in Plymouth Pavilions this week, so may be able to grab a picture on my way back one of the days.... if I remember.

Your wish is granted.

Car park where the Foot Anstey building was. The tower would be about where the white cars are.

16-5-12 | WORK has finally started on a major student flats development in the city centre.

Workmen have moved on to the former Naafi building site on Notte Street – following sale of the land by Plymouth University.

Knightsbridge Student Housing have bought the freehold of the plot for £3.5million.

The company says the building will be finished and ready for its first student occupants by August 2013.

The cleared site has been fenced off for almost 18 months, after the university-owned Naafi building was controversially demolished in 2010.

Plymouth University received planning permission in October that year to build a £21million student housing block. It was originally due to be complete by September this year.

Knightsbridge Student Housing said they will be sticking to the agreed plans, which were scaled back after concerns from nearby residents about the height of the development.

The site has full planning permission for student accommodation of between four and nine storeys, containing 517 student bedrooms – 59 flats and 73 studio rooms.

The site will also include shops and cafes on to Armada Way and Notte Street.

Bob Crompton, Knightsbridge Student Housing CEO, said: "We have looked at investing in Plymouth for a number of years and are delighted to have secured this opportunity.

"Once the building is complete, we will manage the building through our operating company The Student Housing Company, which will provide first class accommodation and care to the students of Plymouth."

The company has appointed Currie and Brown as their employers agent, and Leadbitters as construction partner.

The 1.2 acre site was previously home to teaching accommodation, which has since been relocated to other parts of the university.

The Naafi building was also known as the Hoe Centre.

Protestors had launched a petition against the building's demolition in July 2010, and attempted to get it listed by English Heritage.

The development generated further interest in November 2010 and February 2011 when builders demolishing the former Naafi building uncovered unexploded World War Two bombs.

The discovery of the air-dropped bombs each time resulted in a exclusion zones being set up, and dozens of people evacuated from city centre homes, restaurants, bars and hotels.

The sale was negotiated by independent property adviser GVA.

Gordon Isgrove, GVA land and development director, said: "The successful sale of this central site to Knightsbridge Student Housing is part of Plymouth University's strategy to increase the number of first-class rooms available to students in the city.

"This will also help the City meet its housing targets, because the provision of purpose-built student accommodation will enable the release of large houses occupied by students back into the residential market."

Don't know about you, but it is an improvement:

How is it an improvement? Gone is a classic artdeco building, to be replaced by bland lowrise student accomm!! If that site had to be built on, surely they could have gone tall.

This is a student tower nearing completion in Manchester. 106m 33 stories!

I believe it is an improvement as that building was equally as dull. a few more floors might have been better.

That's good news re: the old Naafi building site -it's been empty far too long.
I took a quick walk that way today and they've got an excavator on site which looks to be trying to level out the ground.
I'm suprised to see on the local news websites quite a bit of support for these new developments, those local sites are usually a hive of nimbyism - maybe it's because it's in the town centre they don't care so much.

In Olympic news, they've got a stage all set up on the Hoe for the Olympic events, and they're applying colourful vinyl stickers to the windows of the old Halifax (?) on Derry's Cross to make it look a bit better for all the cameras tomorrow.

Liverpool is the example of what Plymouth could have been. In the mid 80's Liverpool was basically derelict, along with Manchester and Leeds. Move on 30 years and how things have changed! Why doesn't Plymouth look like this!

Liverpool has a fantastically vibrant city centre. Sadly the same cannot be said of Plymouth!!

The reason Plymouth doesnt look like that is becuase of its transport links, they are extremely poor, Plymouth was named the "worst connected city in the UK". And that is a reason why it is so poor down here. The closing of the airport has only made things 10x worse!

Plymouth is on its knees and relying on Students and the Univeristy to keep it afloat. Is you think the majority of new builds in Plymouth in past few years are mostly connected with the Univerisity; Students housing to New Univeristy Buildings, The sad sate of the city !
