hope this year BCDA thru PPMC will bid out the airport for privitization, SFC airport has a very big potential, the LGU of LU should act on boosting tourism in the province to flock numbers of tourist we should offer something more like what PPMC will do for launching of there 1st SILLAG FESTIVAL. Yes, its true one factor is the number of passenger taking the flights. TB Resorts has a guaranteed 22 seats with or without passenger in a vice-versa flight three times a week still PAID, when this renewal of contract ZA to Thunderbird - ZA is requesting for 10 additional guaranteed seats which TB cannot cover the cost.
Most of the pasengers are from kahuna & holcim employees, and TB.

I commend BCDA-PPMC for organizing this coming Sillag Festival. It will be a one-of-a-kind festival in the country. I hope i can draw many tourists, both foreign and local.

It was a painful loss though for Thunderbird to shoulder some plane seats though unbooked, the LGU must help then in promoting tourism in our province

THE MOST DRAMATIC transformation of the Philippine landscape in the last twenty years occurred in the former sites of military bases. What used to be vast tracks of land where tanks freely rolled and roared; home to the defenders of our land, now stands towering buildings with state-of-the-art facilities: home to giant and small business ventures, entertainment and personal- development enclaves.

Up north, the Poro Point Freeport Zone (PPFZ) in La Union is now home to Thunderbird Resorts—a five-star Mediterranean inspired hotel complemented by including an entertainment area and a nine-hole golf course. Thunderbird Pilipinas Hotels and Resorts, Inc. (TPHRI) has poured P1.2 billion into this venture, a major chunk of the P1.37 billion investments in the PPFZ in 2011.

The San Fernando Airport, also located in the PPFZ, has been improved and plans are underway to upgrade it further in the near future. With the seaport and airport within just kilometers from each other, the BCDA envisions PPFZ to be the global gateway in the north.

The airport in Clark, the seaport in Subic Bay and the SCTEX have created a portal by which Central Luzon can now trade directly with international markets without having to contend with the choking bottlenecks of Metro Manila. SCTEX made the construction of similar expressways viable. The 88-kilometer Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), will connect the SCTEX all the way to La Union, providing seamless and speedy travel to motorists.

MANILA, Philippines - State-run Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is set to privatize a former US military airbase in Northern Luzon, with a plan to build a shopping mall complex early next year.

On the sidelines of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors, Arnel Paciano Casanova, BCDA president and chief executive told reporters that funding from the PPP Center would finance the feasibility study for the San Fernando Airport - previously called the Wallace airbase - in La Union.

"Our vision is to make it viable for a PPP project. Our plan is to transform the airport into an airport mall just like in Changi Airport in Singapore. The terminal is actually a mall itself, you generate revenues from the mall operations aside from the revenue you get from traffic revenue," Casanova said.

Classified as a community airport, the San Fernando Airport is part of the Poro Point Freeport Zone.

Casanova said no airline serves the airport in the absence of passenger traffic.

Once developed, the airport would serve domestic and regional flights, he said.

I think Casanova needs to review his understanding of retail operations inside a terminal. They generate their income from passengers walking thru the concourse( which is the mall) that leads to the departure gates. For the retailers to survive, it needs hundreds of thousand of passengers passing thru each day. It has been many years now and not a single airline has made it thru.

That's why in order for this proposed mall to survive, PPMC-BCDA are on negotiations with airline firms to put up flights with San Fernando Airport (or be a stopover point to some flights). Somehow, this airport will get back to life again when SeAir reopens flights here, and if negotiations with other airline firms will be successful (with Sky Pasada and Cebu Pacific so far yet) Enough? Not yet. They need constant negotiations and with the help of the LGU so as to promote the airport for domestic and international flights in the airport and for the developments as well in the seaport. I bet for the strengthening of tourism so as to support the use of facilities such as this airport

Yup yup, in Urbiztondo, San Juan, just 5 kilometers from San Fernando city proper. Hopefully mag-resume rin ang flights ng SeAir sa San Fernando Airport from Manila very soon.

If I remember, Asian Spirit also tried it here. Historically, this airport used to be the alternate of PAL for Baguio and I believe it still is being positioned to become the primary air access for Baguio. The hill you are referring too was leveled when the airport development took place during 2007-2009. the runway was extended from 1.2kms to 2.1kms


The primary reason for flight crisis here is its very proximity to Manila's NAIA airport, just around 200 kilometers by land. While Clark airport which is only 90kms from NAIA operated as an "independent" airport and served as to decongest NAIA, and also the NLEX and SCTEX construction, flight traffic became thin or if there are flights, it would only last for months since people would still opt to take the cheaper-5 to 7-hour bus drive to La Union from Manila rather than waiting in the airport terminal and flying for 3 hours

This airport serves as an alternate airport to the Loakan airport in baguio since oftentimes it is very foggy in Baguio and thus this airport was developed to serve as a gateway to the tourism and investments in North luzon
