I may love this building but most assuredly DON'T like Stern... and I really think this country is approaching a tipping point because while the unions can't just get a free ride.. they have used their influence in very self defeating ways at times without the unions workers are just at the mercy of developers looking to make a ton while squeezing out men making a good living under the best possible labor conditions at the jobsite for their families. Last thing we need to hear is billionaire's row builders are giving the middle finger to the men that build these palaces of ostentatious plenty... Stern is the bully here to me.

This morning, I went to 57th Street but didn't take a picture on site because of the previous anecdotes of construction workers actually blocking the site from some forumers. I only managed to take a photo across the street:

I like the "Stay Tuned" they have on their sign.

@Otie

Superb work Otie!! Well done.

Re: Stern

I will stay out the convo in regard to Unions but I will say this... The Steinway Tower with Unions will be completely dumb down with materials etc or maybe a completely different tower altogether because of the overall cost to build. This tower will be an instant icon and a gift to New York.

thats not how it works.
the buyers determine the fit and finish on a tower like this. cant cheap out when you want someone to pay 100 million for a floor.

the only place it would hit is the developers giant fat wallet.

Only in New York would a supertall be built on such a small site...

I told you he'd be back...

Also this tower would look kind of silly in London. It's way skinnier and taller than any building there.

In my eyes this is the most elegant project in Manhattan at the moment - I with the other Supertall projects there would look more like this one. Anyway, I'm excited to see how the skyline will look like in ten years from now.

Central Park is about to have the best skyline in the entire city. Amazing!

This tower is the most interesting from engineering point of view. I still cannot get how this tall and this thin structure is possible.

Hate me or not but I'm anticipating Steinway by far less than One Vanderbilt... Sure, the crown looks nice but some day there needs to be something else than those supertall needles that do have an impact on the skyline but without being anywhere near iconic for anybody without the trained eye of an ssc forum reader/major in architecture.

I really prefer the rather chunky project that also includes redevelopment of the underground concourses of Grand Central and maybe even an observation deck in the middle of some of the city's most fascinating blocks.
