Was just by the site last night. No photos because two people from site security were stopping anyone who tried. That was at 6:15 PM.

How is that lighting effect achieved? It almost looks like the terracotta pieces are illuminated from within. If they light it up like this it'll add some romance to the night view from Central Park, which is more than can be said for the less elegant boxes going up.

Not the sun, it's definitely lit. This will be a gorgeous featuring on the building.

Except the sun is setting/has already set behind the mock-up, so there's no way it could have lit it from the camera-facing side (not to mention that you don't get that kind of dark/light contrast from sunlight hitting one side of a building from any angle). It looks to me like the terra cotta tracks are either lit from within or, more likely, lit from below with spotlights sitting in the bottoms of the grooves.

However it's done, the effect is gorgeous. My only concern is whether they can fully implement a lighting scheme like that when it means creating light pollution directly in front of the windows of the ludicrously expensive apartments. But on the other hand, the sides of the buildings with the narrow windows are unlikely to be where most residents spend their time looking.

It doesn't look like much light escapes the deep grooves of the terracotta panels, and I'd wager that the lighting system is LED, which is strongly directional light. It might not add much more light pollution than the ambient city light.

Either way, what a nice flourish for an already strong design.

It will be lit:

.....Its supertall condo building at 111 West 57th Street in Manhattan will culminate in a 200-foot spire that Pasquarelli said has no function other than to be “a piece of beauty in the air.” And its nearly windowless east and west facades will be covered in sinuous terra cotta panels that hint of tradition, even at dizzying heights.

Of course, many crowns are just crowns, but not too many of them admit it.

The illumination of the terra cotta seems to have been designed to have a minimal impact on the people inside the apartments.

I wonder if there will be a dimmer switch for after 10 PM.
