If it had a garage it would be one car per floor.

Unlikely to see that much, as Manhattan doesn't have parking minimums - as far as I'm aware - and developers probably wouldn't opt to construct an expensive deck, if they didn't need to.

There's no need for a garage. Nobody needs one to get around the city... it's actually slower in most cases. Plus, anybody who can afford to live in this building can afford to get a limo with a hot tub and hookers.

Yeah the whole point of a porte cochere is that it's a place to either drop off your car or to be dropped off by your driver. I am curious though: where do the valets take the cars?

There must be a garage nearby on 58th that JDS either owns or leases, because anyone paying these prices should expect their car to arrive in the time it takes to ride the elevator from their unit to the ground floor.

Limo service is like an expensive taxi. You don't have to own the car.

This is a "personal car and driver" tower.

Yeah it is. The shrouded building is the original Steinway Hall, which is being renovated as part of the new development and which will house the residential lobby and some amenities for the new tower. The retail lobby (the glassy cube bit) will sit in the narrow gap just to the right. The tower itself straddles those two lots, further back from the street.

No no, the shrouded building is the original, 1925 structure...

See Ghostface's post below -- this is the current state of construction for the new tower (the concrete is about 1 floor above ground), as seen through that gap between Steinway Hall and its neighbor to the East.

It may be helpful to point out that "Steinway Tower" is not the name of the new building. It's a shorthand we've been using since there's no official name aside from the 111 W. 57th address (similar to how we've been calling 217 W. 57th the "Nordstrom Tower" because there's going to be a Nordstrom store in the base, even though that's not its official name.) At some point we should probably remove "Steinway" from the thread title.

Why? They might call it "Steinway Tower" after all.

They might, sure. But JDS has had their sales site up for at least a year with no mention of the Steinway name except as relates to the preserved original building. Re-branding once sales are underway is pretty uncommon, although obviously not unheard of. The "Nordstrom Tower," for instance, was officially named Central Park Tower well before units went to market.

In that case, Extell didn't want to brand its tower for billionaires with the name of a mid-tier department store. I could 111 W. 57th being a similar case of marketing research into the tastes of their potential buyers. Like: "Why attach ourselves to the name of this piano manufacturer, when it has virtually nothing to do with the condos we're selling." There might also be legal issues with using the Steinway name outside of the context of the original landmark.

All that is to say that 111 W 57th could very well become Steinway Tower, but as of right now it isn't, and if it hasn't been renamed at this point in its life cycle, I find it pretty unlikely that it will.
