Although the "Stairway to Heaven" will be stunning, it's sad that Midtown has lost many of its Gilded Age structures.

I agree, not only midtown but specifically in the upper east side along fifth and madison avenues as well. If there was a time for New York to preserve a good chunk of itself, it should have been from that era. Many beautiful architecture lost forever.

There was a fork in the road and NYC chose not to preserve and decided to accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing city and here we are now.

B4 I became a skyscraper freak I was a nut for NYC's older architecture. Below is a cool blog I use to frequent a lot learning about the history of some of NYC's older buildings that still exist today and about the ones that had been razed.

2014 is going to be a heck of a year especially along the 57th street corridor. I can't wait until these projects joins 432 PA this coming year such as the Steinway, Nordstrom, 220CPS & 45E60th. I'll throw in Tower Verre cuz it's close enough!

Are the two prominent ones on the right both gone?

If you refer to the low rise mansions, they're both gone, though replaced by nice buildings from the 1920s.

Yes. They're still there. One of them is the Plaza Hotel and condos.

Old structures may be gone, but a new icon will rise here.

No they are there: one is Crown building and other one is Plaza hotel. Still standing.

Low rise chateau style mansions are almost all gone except for some that are still standing in upper 5th avenue above 70th street.

why not, they will build there. the back part will be more wide, but the front... anyways it is going to be one exciting tower.

The area surrounding the shed with the white roof in the bottom right has changed a lot. It's now home to an Apple facility, I believe. I ate there back in July.

That's still the southeast corner of Central Park. The Apple glass cube is across the street from there.

I like the way that this is squeezed in and that the old buildings will stay.

Any bets on when this will get started? I'm thinking they are still on the hunt for financing... otherwise it would have been announced.
