Yea it's a damn shame it got a haircut but will be a great tower nonetheless and a special one. Very unique in NYC and that is why it will be special. It will definitely make an impact in the Skyline but not as much. It is aprox 50 ft taller than One57 after all.

If you think The Shard is a great tower, just imagine sticking that puppy in NYC! The Shard is the same height as One57 and aprox 50' shorter than the Tower Verre. I still think The Shard is a great tower and would love to have something like that in NYC and the Tower Verre imo, will be our Shard, but better looking.

I'm so with you there, 432park has the best interiors I've seen in a residential tower at the exception of TV. Tho I'm curious to see what Steinway will look like on the inside.

TV towers and observation towers are skinnier, but this is arguably the skinniest skyscraper.

As a comparison, Washington Monument in D.C. is 55 ft (16.8 m) at its base.
This Building will be about 59 x 79 ft (18 x 24 m) so it would be almost as thin as the Washington Monument on one side, but two and a half times taller!
Not to mention that the Washington Monument is just that a non habitable monument and this would be an inhabited building.

I am not sure if this is the most thin and if it will stay that way for a long time, but it is not about this. This tower will open a new era of extra thin and extremely high towers and as such will always be the FIRST AMONG EQUALS.

Same as ESB which is not the highest in the world, but it is the most classic and proportionate skyscraper in the world which will always stay above other since it was the first such a finished and graceful building ever completed.

it is unfortunate that a huge tower on today's Metropolitan Life Insurance North Building stump was never finished. it would be another perfect classic example but instead of a more lean tower like ESB it was supposed to be very wide.

In today's NY Post:
http://nypost.com/2014/02/24/park-hy...-debut-aug-28/

Quote:
At a third project that’s got a much longer way to go, excavation proceeds apace on 111 W. 57th St.

That’s the super-slender, 1,350-footer previously identified in roughly 300 articles — inaccurately, its spokespersons say — as 107 W. 57th St.

The gently rippling tower designed by SHoP Architects has also been misrepresented in nearly every instance as a JDS project.

It is in fact a joint venture of Kevin Maloney’s Property Markets Group (PMG) and Michael Stern’s JDS Development Group, the same successful partnership behind the record-setting Walker Tower condo conversion.

In a sign that things are about to kick into high gear, PMG just moved a team into the adjacent 17-story Steinway building, the recently designated landmark, that will be incorporated into the project as part of its retail component. Steinway will line up at sidewalk level with a new glass at the tower’s base.

Yeah, I've been thinking for a long time that we need to change the title thread. This thing is going to be called 111 W. 57th, it's clearly the most marketable number in the range of possible addresses.

JDS, Property Markets break ground on 111 West 57th

The Midtown tower will likely be the tallest residential building in New York City

http://therealdeal.com/blog/2014/02/...111-west-57th/

Quote:
Michael Stern’s JDS Development and Kevin Maloney’s Property Markets Group have begun construction at the ultra skinny 1,350-foot hotel and condominium tower on the Upper West Side, slated to be the city’s tallest residential tower if all goes as planned.

The 60-foot-wide SHoP Architects-designed structure, slated to rise at 111 West 57th Street (previously reported as 107 West 57th Street), will stand 100 feet taller than the Empire State Building and is partially situated on a landmarked site.

Excavation began this week, the New York Post reported.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the design back in October of last year. The planned tower would be covered with bronze-and-white terra-cotta stripes, as The Real Deal previously reported.

JDS and Property Markets bought the parcel, along with the land lease, 45,000 square feet of air rights and a neighboring property for $131.5 million in March of 2013.
