I will essentially be the same size as the skinniest portion of One57, but several hundred feet taller. Crazy.

I wonder how much floorspace the top-most apartments have. Can't be much more than my little apartment.

I was wondering that same thing. They do seem tiny. I know some of them will be duplexes and triplexes (and I'm almost sure the penthouse is a quad). But even then, there'll be a lot of floorspace eaten up with staircases.

The top apartment does take up 4 floors. The 4 apartments below that each take up 2.

I think Nikolai mentioned swinging by the site a week or two ago and nothing much had happened yet, excavation or otherwise.

interesting detail of the back wall. I hope it is not balconies - they would look pretty bad on this tower.

It would be nice if the company that was building this ultra-luxury residential tower would be required to build 5,000 Middle Income and 10,000 Low Income housing units before they get to please their billionaire customers.

Upcoming program at skyscraper museum
March 11, 2014 6:30PM-8:00PM
http://www.skyscraper.org/home.htm

Mirror, mirror... who is the slenderest of them all? 111 W. 57TH ST.

Quote:
Among the extraordinary new crop of New York's super-slim, ultra-luxury residential towers surveyed in The Skyscraper Museum's exhibition SKY HIGH & the logic of luxury, the most slender of all is the 111 W. 57th St., designed by SHoP Architects, with structural engineering by WSP Group for JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group. With a ratio of the width of the base to height of 1:23, the 1,350+ ft tower will be the most slender building in the world.
It's interesting they say 1350' +. I wonder how much over do they plan to go.

Yeah, I think what's confusing are those gaps (both the big ones for the air to pass through, and the small ones between each protruding floor). If you don't have the right sense of scale, it's easy to confuse them for balconies.

I can't remember, did we ever figure out whether the setbacks on the South side are meant to be accessible? They'd be narrow an very windy, but easily the most spectacular terraces in the City.

If the building does have balconies on the south side on the setbacks, it would be extremely dangerous, especially on windy days. And also, I think the setbacks look too thin. We could stand on them, but we can fall anytime. And also, half of the building wouldn't have balconies on the south side, but that's not really an issue because that's only about 50 units and people probably paid less for it.

So those aren't balconies on the north side? They look like they could be. Judging from the renderings, they look about the right size.

Which do you mean? The North side is made up of a series of protruding curtain walls, separated by horizontal gaps ~2-3 ft. tall.

Then there are at least two larger openings (roughly halfway up the tower, and again at the base of the crown), which the architects have explained are meant to allow wind to pass through, in order to reduce wind resistance and break up vortices, a la 432 Park.

Which in theory someone could stand in. But they're essentially wind tunnels so, like 432 Park, I believe that these gaps are essentially mechanical floors.

Over on SSP people are posting that at the presentation at the skyscraper museum it was said that this tower will be "right at about 1400 feet."

At the lecture a render was shown with people standing outside. Of course, the design is not final at this point.

The video should show up on Skyscraper Museum youtube channel soon.
