I don't know if any of you follow Humans of New York on Facebook, but he posted one today that made me laugh/sigh/bang my head against the wall. Usually I love his stuff, though.

Some questionable data, but excitement is building on that beauty starting construction.

Construction Begins on Manhattan’s Tallest Condominium Tower
http://www.6sqft.com/construction-be...ominium-tower/

Quote:
Construction on the SHoP Architects-designed tower at 111 West 57th Street has finally begun! Yesterday evening, one of 6sqft’s reporters walked past the site and took a quick snap of the newly arrived construction vehicles and equipment.

The Manhattan giant, which will also be the world’s slenderest tower, will rise 1,300-feet high, above a floor plate of around 60-feet wide. The building will host three elevators and each floor will be its own 5,000-square-foot apartment with 15-foot ceilings. And for those worried how wind load will affect the 76-story structure, a huge steel weight will be suspended within the top of the building to keep it from swaying (yikes).

The luxury condominium tower project is a conversion of and addition to the landmark Steinway building. The property is located within walking distance of a wealth of New York City gems, including Central Park, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Museum of Modern Art, and the world-famous Fifth Avenue and 57th Street shopping districts.

Word on the street was that construction would commence Spring 2014, and it looks like things are right on track. The building is being developed by JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group, and managed by JDS Construction Group.

Tallest condominium tower? Isn't it smaller than 432 PA?

there is a possibility that it will be taller by a few feet. awhile back an unconfirmed height figure came out which was around 1 foot taller than 432. It's supposed to be 'about' 1400 ft.

I walked by the site of this tower while visiting New York earlier this week, and I did a double-take. It's hard to understand just how narrow this thing will be without seeing, in person, where it's going to grow from. And at least to my eyes, though I know others' as well, it's a much more attractive design than 432 Park Ave.

I Agree. The footprint is about 18 meter, so it will be a very slender tower.

Excavation is mostly for small building(entrance) to 111. Majority of the tower will be build "on top" of Steinway building. Can somebody explain how the tower will be supported?

It is pretty and slim... Probably not as practical/useful though as Park Avenue... Not that much living space at the top.

By the way... Why isn't this project in the supertalls construction section yet ?

It wont be build on top of the existing Steinway Building, they will use its ventilation patio.

In the picture bellow you can see the where it will be buit. As you said, the part of the front, where they are currently excavating, is for the entrance pavillion. The actual tower will be built begining at the end of the wall, on the left side, with the exposed hollow blocks, and it will go from that corner to the facade at the back. They will tear down that two floor volume at the left (the one with yelow brick on the top)

From east to west, it will go from the neighboring building's wall (on the right) to the facade you can see on the left that has windows. Obviuosly, all those windows in the two facades will be closed.

It will be suported by shear walls on the core and west and east facades. plus four columns on north and south facades (two on each) as you can see on the drawing bellow the picture.

SSP is wrong surprisingly often. Go by the site. Excavation is underway, but actual work on the foundation hasn't started yet.

In SSP it isn't labeled as under construction either. First of all, they don't necessarily label the threads as U/C, prep, etc as in here, the title there is "NEW YORK | 111 W 57th St | 1,350 FT | 77 FLOORS" they didn't add any label with the status.

And anyway, in SSP it is still on the "Highrise & Supertall Proposals" forums. So there isn't in the status U/C either.

edit. I guess you mean in the diagrams, then yes, there it is at "under construction" status. But in the forums, it isn't.
