432 Park, maybe. .it's quick to remember. But generally it's an identification people remember, not a street address.

That's kind of the point. Developers are serving their buyers, not random people. The people who matter, in real estate terms, all know the buildings like 740 Park and 15 CPW.

Developers know what they're doing, random posters on skyscraper websites don't. You can't sell $100 million apartments in some building with a cheesy name like "Le Royale" that could be anywhere in the world, whether Toronto, Dubai, Bogota, Shenzhen, or wherever.

The thing that kills me, though I'll never have to personally worry is these buildings are going up on 57st that is still not on the Parks border.
There is still two blocks worth of prime real estate to the north that could conceivably take away the only purpose these things are being built for( a view of the park).
Now anything on CPS is views for eternity.

But a lot of the towers on CPS are landmarks that will never be replaced.

Hampshire House (sloped green roof) and Essex House are not landmarked.

But they will never be razed, nor will the Trump Parc or Ritz Carlton.

I hope they will! They're some of my favourite set of skyscrapers in New York!

I love the layered approach of buildings from Central Park, with the old classical buildings in the foreground stepping up to the ultra slim futuristic giants of the 21st century!

To be fair, I could do with getting rid of the giant ESSEX HOUSE sign.

Or at the very least moving it to the facade of the building, rather than sticking out the top.

If a sign is old enough, New Yorkers get very attached to it - regardless of what it says. There was an enormous stink about the removal of the Kentile Floors sign in Gowanus, despite the fact that the company was a filthy polluter, selling asbestos-laced flooring for decades that undoubtedly gave mesothelioma to hundreds if not thousands of people.

I don't know what it is about signs, but people get sentimental, and it doesn't even have to take that long. Yahoo! had a very prominent sign up along the freeway in San Francisco that eventually came down (because, as most of you probably know, Yahoo! isn't exactly a major tech player anymore and they needed to cut costs where they could)... and people freaked out, trying to raise funds to save it. And it had only been there like 10 years!

I happen to like the Essex House sign, but I also wouldn't cry over it if it were somehow to go. But I would be deeply upset if either Hampshire House or Essex House themselves were replaced by something modern. They're just too iconic. Put whatever you want behind them, but as far as I'm concerned, they should be landmarked asap.

There are a handful of buildings on CPS that I'd happily see replaced however, starting with the Park Lane and that brown and black box just to the West of Essex in that photo above.

well, at least people won't have to worry about living in front of it.

I love skyscrapers. With that said, here's a Bill Moyers piece about the buildings going up on Billionaires' Row.

(p.s. - I'm posting this on the threads of the Billionaires' Row buildings because it makes perfect sense to do that.)

The Essex House sign has to stay, no questions asked. It's a memorable piece of the Central Park skyline, and without it, Essex House becomes unrecognizeable - just another art deco midrise in NY.

It'll have to change eventually.

I wonder what 'Essex House' is in mandarin.

you do realize if that logic were employed pretty much nothing new would have ever been built. manhattan was entirely built up before the war ever started.
