^ Which from the sound of it, doesn't look too far off…

Props to NYGuy on SSP for finding this.

"This February, the developers broke ground on a 1,350-foot hotel and condo tower designed by SHoP architects. They are currently looking for a $500 million construction loan, with Maloney saying they have “a couple of offers” from banks."

Been there and spoke to the guy who is in charge - they are doing excavations until February- March. Then, god and finance willing, they will start the work on foundations

What about demolition of the current structure on top of the actual tower site? They've just been digging in the alleyway where the lobby will be.

as far as I know - nothing is being demolished. Maybe I missed it, but I don't think so.

They're going to carve out some of the interior of Steinway aren't they?

I don't think there is any demolition. They are keeping that structure, and building adjacent and above.

No, they need to demolish a two-or-so story windowless brick structure behind the current Steinway building in order to build this tower- that is where the tower will rise.

You can see it in this shot

Yep, definitely some demo work to be done. You can see how the building is tucked back "behind" the front of the Steinway building in these NYguy photos from SSP.

Here's a Google Earth screengrab also provided by NYguy that shows the site from above. I believe everything with the dark grey tar roof is getting demolished. Maybe slightly more, though. I'm really not sure.

Above post, very insightful/illustrative.

It really shows how insanely small plot it really is !!
I mean, look and compare those cars with the square where the tower is going to be (that gray roof and area near it) ! And a 400+ supertall...(!) Insane.

So cool.

Most ugly tower in N.Y.

Way to high for the neighbourhood. And to slender, failed composition.

Sometimes you think you're a top notch archicritic but then you have to realize that you absolutely don't know what the hell you're talking about...it just happened to you too..
Happy new year!

This feeling shall pass.

I'm reminded of my friend who insisted 432Park was way out of its element in midtown and thought it would look randomly monstrous when completed, "ruining" the skyline.

Needless to say, I found myself constantly pointing it out to him because he would always fail to see it. Looking on from Central Park, he turns and says, "oh, it looks fine."

*also, it's tall because it's slender, not the other way around.
