From the building website, a good look at where the new tower will meet the current landmark:

Only the lobby structure will be in the alleyway. That photo clearly shows it takes up space behind the neighbouring building as well, which is where the brick lowrise is.

That's incorrect.

I'll just post this image. Maybe you'll be able to figure things out after seeing it.

You see that black roof? That is where the building will be. Part of it is wedged behind the neighbouring building.

It looks like part of the tower will take up at least half of that alleyway.

The base of the tower will be 80 feet deep (from south to north) and 60 feet wide (from east to west). Do you really think that small two-story section can accommodate that amount of area?

Vertical Gotham posted a useful image above. Here's another:

BTW, as I see it, as soon as JDS purchased the Steinway building to add to the 43-foot-wide alley they already owned, and the Landmarks commission agreed to let JDS take down that two-story section, that two-story section became part of the alley.

Taken by ILNY back in September:

We're going to see a 1400-foot building rise in a 43-foot-wide (at the front) to 50-foot-wide (at the back) alley. It's going to be amazing to watch.

What ThatOneGuy is saying is not that it won't be in the alley, he's saying that the alley itself is not the whole space it will occupy. It will occupy the alley AND the place where the brick lowrise things are.

All clear for everyone now?

That wasn't at all what he was saying. Direct quotes:

"Only the lobby structure will be in the alleyway. That photo clearly shows it takes up space behind the neighboring building as well, which is where the brick lowrise is."

This is false, as a good portion of the tower will rise in the existing alley (not including the two-story section, which is now essentially part of the alley as well).

Another quote:

"You see that black roof? That is where the building will be. Part of it is wedged behind the neighboring building."

Only a portion of the tower will rise where the low-rise building is currently. Refer to the same image above.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the architectural models in the collage below indicate that a portion of the Steinway building currently facing 58th street will be removed to create the "open court" referred to in the plans. As that portion is about 15 stories high, that would represent a major change to the landmarked structure. See the "X" marks below:

No, you completely misinterpret his posts. What he said was a direct response to the people implying it will rise exclusively in the alleyway. You are having a whole argument about being unable to understand other people's posts.

Your red rectangle is wider than deep, the new Tower will be not.
Also they said they will redo the whole Interior of the part of Steinway facing 58th st. anyway, so I think its possible that they will remove a part of it to get the base of the tower bigger, but still keep a little backyard.

edit: Some links..

What will the lower floors of the building be fitted with? There would be minimal natural light. Not good for apartments or public living spaces.

No. Your statement is false. I just posted his exact quote.

"Only the lobby structure will be in the alleyway."

That is false, as I just proved above. The glass atrium or lobby will occupy the front of the current alley. The 1400-foot tower will begin IN THE ALLEY where the Steinway building fronting on 57th Street cuts inward, to the west.

I'm not misinterpreting anything. The problem began when someone who knew less about this project erroneously attempted to correct someone who knew more about it.

As for the diagram I posted, the red square just shows the portion of the current alley that will host a part of the base of the tower. It does not represent the total footprint of the tower. The tower will be 79.25' deep and 58.75' wide, and will occupy a portion of the current Steinway building to the west of the alley, as well as the area where the two-story structure is currently.

That's what amazes me about some of these new skinny-es. Just the audacity to initially conceptualize such a tall tower in such a small space. And then to actually build it? But I'm glad they are doing it, and I love the fact that they are leaving the old buildings mostly intact. I like the combo of classic architecture at eye level, with massive modern skyscrapers "floating" above.
