Lovely Belgian people, I love Gent and this building is a BIG mistake for your historic city. Believe me, I'm from the UK and my country is covered in these nasty grey concrete mid-rises! who the hell gave this planning permission?!

Ghent isn't a historic city as much as it is a modern city with a historical city center. It's still living urban tissue: it has an old core but with more recent layers around it. Like pretty much any other European city of its size, it already has a fair share of post-war tower architecture.

The challenge isn't to keep towers out of the city altogether, but to keep their impact on the old town as limited as possible. The distance between the old city center and the main railway station is big enough for the tower not to have any impact on the old town whatsoever. The only places in the city center from where you'll be able to see the tower would be from the top of the Castle or the Belfry, but from there you can already see plenty of other mid rises anyway

The building permit for this tower was granted by the city itself, obviously, because it complied with all the rules the city has for high-rise development - and Ghent has specific high-rise strategy. The design was selected from an open international competition. Whether you think it's ugly or not will always remain a question of taste. But if you made your assessment based upon a dislike of concrete: don't worry, the cladding is brick

But hifive is right: it's a nasty grey concrete mid rise.
It's not the building's size nor the location it's just the cheap design and old fashioned urban implantation without liveable plinths on human size.

(sorry for my terrible english)

Possible. But the point was that the tower is not build in the historic city centre. The distance between de Link and the historic city centre is more than 2 km.

The - current - appearance may suggest a nasty concrete Guy's Hospital-look-a-like, but don't worry hifive605. The bare steel and concrete will disappear or dissipate (if structural, i.e. the red steel). The Link is a crucial element in the bigger picture of the renewal of our main station. The building will feature a low-rise (three layers) extension along the bus corridor that will wrap around, embrace and contain mobility in the transfer area. And as Puinkabouter said: not a single tourist looking for the medieval aspects of our city, except for those who scale the Belfry or those who arrive by train, will ever see the building. Have you already seen the cladding? I have to admit, i love it

and on a side note: snot, I don't think there's anything old fashioned about the urban implementation.. Kan je me eens up to speed brengen?

I'm also a bit disappointed in the current cladding. I think it would looked better with lighter colours like yellow or white or a combination of those two. But I can live with the current colour scheme.

It's a good thing different kind of bricks are used. The tower looks less monotonous because of that. BTW: Fortunately buildings in brick often look less grey than concrete buildings.

The palette could use some lighters colours, yes. Also, when seen from a reasonable distance, the variety of colours seems to fade, which is a bit worrying.
