FRANKFURT | Neuer Henninger Turm | 140m | 37 fl | Com

One of the largest Sites in Frankfurt Sachsenhausen is undergoing a redevelepoment, known also as the Henninger Site formerly kwown as a large Beer Brewery. The Site also contains also the (for Frankfurters) famous "Henninger Turm".

Buildt in 1960, opened in 1961 (http://www.aufbau-ffm.de/serie/Teil23-25/25-9.html), it was supposed to hold all the ingrendients needed for Brewing Beer. Mainly they buildt a tower (120m) due to the lack of space at the site.
On top the was a public viewing platform as well as a rotating restaurant.

When the Brewery stopped production the site was demolished except the Henninger Turm, but which was closed anyway as well in 2003.

Now there has been an architectural competition to redevelope the tower because it's too costly and uneconomic to save the tower.

The chosen design resembles a lot the old Tower and gives back the Frankfurters a little bit of this famous Landmark.

The facts:
http://www.dam-online.de/portal/de/A...ils1/1594.aspx
Meixner Schlüter Wendt Architekten, Frankfurt
start of construction: 2013
130m tall
Apartement Tower (130 apartements)
Green facade with plants ranking on them (south, east and west side)
New big Beer can on top, consisting of a new "Beer Can" (rotating restaurant, viewing platform and the only rotating luxury apartement in Frankfurt on top.
Completion in 2015
Start of demolition of the old Henninger Turm starting in autumn 2012.

So is this new project a renovation/reconstruction of the old Henninger Tower or a demolishing-and-rebuilding-again of the old tower?

In panoramas of Frankfurt's skyline I always wondered what this tower was. It makes sense to me now, although im wondering if the new tower keeps the same basic proportions of the old one?

yes about the same proportions, at least the silhuette...a bit taller though. which is always good. also to mention that frankfurt does not have at the moment such a tall apartement tower.

the round element on top of the tower is not only going to have a restaurant, but also (aparently) an apartment, which will rotate (just like the restaurant).

Will the new tower have an observation deck besides the restaurant?

I wish they would have chosen this entry from Jürgen Engel Architekten. This would have been a spectacular observation deck.

Anyway, it looks like it is time to revive this thread.
According to an info I got, the tower is supposed to be 136m tall, with 39 storeys. Demolition is due to start on January 2, 2013.

Finally, that eyesore will be gone. It was the one thing I didn't like on the skyline.

^ Me too. Is there any chance we still might see that entry realized, instead of that Meixner Schlüter one?

The demolition of the old Henninger Turm has begun 2 days ago.
At the beginning they will work in the inside, in approx. 2 weeks the scaffold will be erected to slowly demolish the building form top to bottom.
In about 6 months the demoliton will be completed and construction of the new apartement tower starts immediatly after.

At the area around the new henninger turm there will be constructed 3 additional apartement highrises, up to 14 stories tall.

please change status to "demo", thankyou

On the one hand I am very happy that this eyesore will be removed but I am not convinced by the new tower.

Might look very tacky with this revolving restaurant on top. But I am always open for positive surprises.

They are currently demolishing the old Tower, after that the construction will immediately start!
