Four proposals received for LIRR at Penn Station
Friday, November 11, 2016

NEW York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and its Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) subsidiary announced that they have received four design proposals from qualified engineering firms for the modernisation of LIRR’s part of Penn Station as part of plans to transform Penn Station and the historic James A. Farley Post Office into a transport hub

Working with LIRR, the winning firm will have six months to put the finishing touches on a design-build plan that will allow a general contractor to begin work in 2017

More Kawasaki EMU cars for MTA Metro-North
17 Nov 2016

USA: An order for 60 more Kawasaki Rail Car Type M8 electric multiple-unit cars to increase capacity on Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven Line was approved by the New York MTA board on November 16.

There is an option for a further 34 cars, and the base order is also expected to include the conversion of 10 existing M8 cars into café cars. The new cars are being funded by the state of Connecticut (65%) and MTA’s capital programme (35%), while the café cars are being funded entirely by Connecticut

READ FIRST:
Recorded November 27th, 2016 (11/27/16). Welcome aboard Amtrak Thanksgiving Holiday Extra Northeast Regional train 1099, originating out of New York Penn Station & bound for Washington DC with leased commuter equipment (NJT GE Arrow III EMU). Along the way, we make the following station stops:

Newark Penn Station - 14:20
Metropark - 31:08
Trenton Transit Center - 1:02:55
30th Street Station, Philadelphia - 1:34:15
Wilmington, DE - 2:07:30
Baltimore Penn Station - 3:04:51
BWI Airport Railway Station - 3:21:02
New Carrollton - 3:38:25
Union Station, Washington DC - 3:47:05

Due to the equipment, we are limited to 80 MPH the entire way down, but despite that, the ride was still pretty decent. We start off in the first car (1361), but end up moving to the second car (1362), so that I can position myself over a motor truck as opposed to a trailer truck. Additionally, the horn on 1361 was crap, so I didn't have a compelling reason to stay in the first car. I apologize for the sun sliding into and out of the shot, as I did not anticipate the winding nature of the Corridor to be an issue with the lighting this time of year. At the very least, the audio is well captured, and the conductor is quite cheerful. Along the way, we play leapfrog with Northeast Regional train 145 @ Hamilton, Trenton, and 30th Street, a pair of guys coming from Philly bound for NYC get on at Trenton after getting off SEPTA only to find out they've gotten on the wrong train and are headed back to Philly, and we see lots and lots of railfans @ various stations. Thanks for watching and enjoy the ride =)

L.I.R.R. Derailment Injures More Than 100 in Brooklyn

By ELI ROSENBERG and VIVIAN YEEJAN. 4, 2017

A Long Island Rail Road train crashed at a major transportation hub in Brooklyn during the morning rush on Wednesday, injuring over 100 people and disrupting the commute for thousands, the authorities said.

Officials said the train rammed into a bumper as it pulled into the Atlantic Terminal station in Downtown Brooklyn around 8 a.m., knocking at least the front two cars off the tracks.

Donette Smith, 55, who was on board, said people had begun to stand in the aisle as the train moved into the station. Then an “extremely hard” jolt sent everyone falling to the floor. “People just went flying,” she said. “Bodies were everywhere. It was very scary.”

The passengers emerged to find the station filled with smoke. “I couldn’t see,” Ms. Smith said.

People were removed from the train on stretchers, and one person had a bloody mouth, she said.

Fire Department officials said the crash could have been far worse. One rail of Track 6, on which the train was traveling, sliced through the floor of a train car, they said. And the train crashed into what the officials characterized as a small waiting room or workroom beyond the track, causing substantial damage.

Most of the injuries occurred when the train, which was traveling from Far Rockaway, Queens, came to an abrupt stop after crashing into the bumper block at the end of the track, said Thomas F. Prendergast, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which oversees the Long Island Rail Road.

Mr. Prendergast said the train’s operator had been supposed to brake before the train reached the bumper block; there are no other mechanisms on the train to prevent it from hitting the block at that point. He said that he did not know whether the train had been fitted with a camera, and that the train’s operator was being interviewed.

Most of the passengers, who numbered between 600 and 700, were able to walk off the train. Officials said 106 people had been taken to hospitals. The most severe injury appeared to be a woman who may have broken her leg, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo told reporters on the scene. The Fire Department responded around 8:20 a.m., said a deputy assistant fire chief, Dan Donoghue.

Photographs and videos shared by commuters on social media in the moments after the crash showed the train askance on the platform, its windows broken. Firefighters escorted injured passengers away from the train while the police worked to disperse the crowd on the platform.

Steben Medina, a doorman from Sunset Park, was having a coffee at Atlantic Terminal when he heard a loud crash followed by a series of screams. “The entire structure started shaking,” Mr. Medina, 47, said. “I thought a bomb had gone off or something.”

The derailment was reminiscent of a New Jersey Transit train crash in September that killed a woman who was standing on a platform at the terminal in Hoboken and injured more than 100 others.

In that crash, an arriving train also plowed through the bumper at the end of a track and hit the station.

In Brooklyn on Wednesday, Mr. Cuomo said the Hoboken crash had been “much worse — that train was coming in much faster, did much more damage, hurt many more people.”

Officials said that investigators were looking to determine why the train did not stop short of the bumper.

RPA report details five one-seat ride options to JFK Airport

Quote:
The Regional Plan Association decided to explore this point further, and in a report out today they’ve detailed five different approaches for a “one-seat ride” to JFK

According to the report, the five options are as follows:
  • AirTrain Connection: Connect the AirTrain to the LIRR mainline at Jamaica, creating a one-seat ride from Penn Station and Grand Central to JFK.
  • LIRR Airport Express: Extend the unused Rockaway Beach Branch LIRR line in Queens into the airport, and run service from Penn Station or Grand Central along the LIRR mainline to the branch line.
  • 2nd Ave Subway Extension to Airport: Extend the Second Avenue subway to Brooklyn and connect to the airport using the Atlantic and Rockaway Beach rights-of-way.
  • 3rd Avenue Express: Connect a new rail line along Third Avenue in Manhattan through the Atlantic and Rockaway Beach rights-of-way as part of a larger transformation of the region’s rail network.
  • Super Express: Construct a new rail right-of-way, most likely a tunnel, between Manhattan and the airport.

I think the 3rd Ave Express and the full Rockaway Beach extension should be built together, with multiple stops along the Rockaway Beach line. Maybe see about switching the A-train back to the LIRR?
