Very nice update! An hour to render? You must have a lot of patients!

You see, each render actually only took about 5mins and there are 5 renders cropped into one in that picture. What takes the longest is to do the settings, and to put all the renders together in Photoshop! xD
- though, if the rendertime was without the setting time and the photoshop time. I think it would be arround 20mins max!

Bad news!

the cooler of my laptop has taken a large amount of damage after a drop some time ago, and the problems are getting worse!
I will therefore not be able to work on the city since it makes the pc so hot, that it idiomatically shuts down as part of safety.
And to make matters even worse, then I had to pay ca. 5000dkk to repair it (ca 672Euro), and because that is more than the computer cost when I bought it, it will not be sent of the the manufacturer either.
- So now I am hopping that my dad can solve the problem. But if not. Then the city might be history. But I will keep you updated.

So after a long time of Standstill in the city (because of the cooler probs) It's back.
BUT I stumbled over the idea of a more textured approach to the city. In that way, it will be possible for me to model more and more, without having to put tons of detail into it.
So I decided to redo the whole thing. Simply put it back to 0%, and I did!.
First of all. My area groups will be way better in this version, I will only make one box (4 roads and buildings inside) pr. area. Which in the end makes it possible to render with more areas at once.
I have also trashed the idea of a sub-mediterranean area, and replaced it with a more New York'ish approach.
I will also put in historical landmarks, and in some areas it will be possible to see that the crime rate is higher. While in others there will be damages of old riots/drug problems/natural disasters and much more. And dont worry. The models from the old city. Will bee used in this city aswell!
So far. Only one area has been started, and I'm working a bit slow atm. Because of the exams time. But hope you like it:

the question I have is how do you get the textures so realistic looking? I can do detailed stuff but not textured =(

Textures can be tricky I grant you, the advantage is obviously memory size as you can create a lot more apparent detail. My recommendations on textures are as follows.

• Always try to create a similar light contrast for every texture you use, a kind of medium contrast. This enables shadows and sunlight to create a more realistic effect on all the textures.
  
  
• Goes without saying but scale is key, especially with bricks, make sure your string courses are scaled appropriately.
  
  
• Add bump channels for textures if you can and also reflection channels, alpha-ed so that just the windows reflect and not the brickwork.

I'll take ~1 to scale, I know the other 2 but how you get yours to look so clean though, as in like none pixelated? I mean make it a PNG or GIF maybe but =l
