Just placed the first bit og highway on the map!



and these are the bits wich the highway was created with! Everything but the lampposts are made by me

first of, this is the main highway strip. There will be avenues located on each side of it


Then there is the strip with the ramps for cars to get on and off the highway


Now, this is the bridge that will run over the highway, so that the crossing roads can get connected


so, I didnt want there to be a bridge for every road, cause it would look super wierd. Instead I made these.
These are the strips that go under the bridge, and there instead of it


Since the cars cant hover over that, I made this for it aswell


These are the big road signs


these are the lamppost take from the 3D warehouse


and these are those safety barriers running along the road

This is how I do it - make the Transparency (the glass of the pole) 0% Then add a point light and add an extra "0" to the number showed. So if the number is 18, you make it 180.. That is what mine is, if I remember correctly

Here is what i have the lights are pointing down as they come from street lamps but i dont know how to do the whole street? This was quickly done without and actually proper rendering

Yeah i know that i did it so that my computer may not crash once the construction gets more full on but like the whole of your street lights up unlike mine which only does some :/ what power do you use? and how many street lights do you have on a road?

you better use Pointlights instead of spots.. + place more lampposts

Around 1 on each site pr 10m I belive - Though, if rendering becomes a problem, then use threads It makes the rendering more stabil and makes takes less time
Though you should know, that the more threads you make... The more laggy the rest of the pc will be while rendering

I have never used threads in my life i have no idea how to aha :P when you say threads do you mean scenes?

nono! When you click on set settings for render, then there is a option called threads. Set it to 2 or 3 (tops 5) and then it will be running great!!

Oh right well my Kerky works fine its usually sketchup which crashes if too complex :/

Make alot of Components, and alot of Layers!!

Components makes it waaay easier to handle a file and edit great amounds of fx cladding. So forget about Groups and start combining!
Here is an example:

Lets say we are creating a bit of cladding and these are the 3 ways of making the components

1. Create the cladding, put it in a comonent.
2. Create the glass first and then the frames, and then put those in seperate comps and into a combined one afterwards
3. the best way is, Create the first frame and into a component, and do this will all frames and windows. Then put the frames in to a combined comp and the same with the windows. Then combine the combined..

Now, By using layers you can in some way do the same as with components.. Though even better. In layers, you get a list with the differet layers.
f.eks. you can create a layer called "Lampposts" and then add all of those into it. When you uncheck that layer. It hides everything that you put in the layer!
By doing so, you can create huge files and still with no lag! How do you think guys like DS can create such great constructions, and even I can make a fully detailed city that I can still edit on the map??

You see, there are some great priviliges of asking DS to help out.

This model isnt even 50% done, and still it holds 104 components and around 7 layers..
It can run as if there were no model in this file!!
When done, it will be a modern skyscraper built on top of an older 19th century building! (glass color may not be final)
