Duomo's unique walkable roof, it is the only cathedral in the world you can visit outside, inside and from above

It hosts right now a cracking art exposition made of coloured slugs! very funny!

Milano's Duomo cathedral facade, in this picture, in the central balcony, you can find a very important statue:

Yes! It is the statue that inspire the sculptor Bartholdi in the creation of the Statue of the Liberty! The world icon! This statue is much earlier though that the NY's one: it was created in 1810 by sculptor Pacetti. It is almost sure that Bartholdi drew inspiration from this statue to create his own very famous...and bigger version!

More details coming:

the face is really...the very same!!!

ok this is not Milan, but it is just to show the extraordinary richness of monumental sites even outside Milan, overall for what concerns churches, but also palaces and villa.
We're in Morimondo, some 20 km from Milan, and this is the late romanesque-very early gothic Abbey of Sanctae Mariae Morimundi:

the grace and the colourness of lombard gothic, a very enjoyable one:

The bright light always seems to play between the ancient clay bricks and the small windows:

Renaissance choir built by artist Francesco Giramo:

This kind of architecture is almost impossible to reduce to a picture, to an image. Romanesque architecture it is all about atmosphere and sensation. It deals with the perception of aethernity, something too big to be reduced in an image. Of course this age of exteriorization and of in-your-face disneyan tastes penalizes this kind of ancient architecture that requires a personal visit to be enjoyed. But I hope somehow I have communicated you some little part of the atmosphere of this ancient, intact place

Thank you!

Antonello Saiz pictures of the Milan's cathedral. As we all should know by now, the Duomo has been built in a mixed lombard-germanic kind of gothic. But the richness of the sculptural set has nothing to do with whatever happened noth of the Alps: it is purely and completely italian marble sculpture, a joyful explosion of shapes and body, of classical beauties and perfect proportions. Here you are another one unique aspect of this cathedral:

The magnificence of Liberty style main portal:
