San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro Sacellum, previous to 313 a.C. This is one of the most ancient christian temples ever, it was used before Christianis was liberalized...

From a visitors point of view it's probably an advantage that Milan is not the magnet that Rome, Florence and Venice have become making those wonderful cities almost not worth seeing at certain times of the year (too many) due to overwhelming numbers of tourists completly destroying any atmosphere of an ancient city. Anyone with a knowledge of European history will know that Milan was one of the most important centres of western culture for many centuries so it stands to reason that despite the fact that it is not as unspoiled as Florence or Rome it must contain a wealth of magnificent buildings and works of art. Thanks for these wonderful photos, it has revived my interest in visiting your city again.

Thank you for your very kind words. Of course it is a city that has always loved the inner elegance instead of the exteriorization of power and wealth...for example, in a milanese perspective, a Palazzo should be very sober in the exterior, indulging only in very few details and always very harmonized, while in its interiors it may be as rich as any royal palace in an european capital...esterior luxury is seen as somewhat vulcar and coarse, and so it is something to avoid. it is a strange attitude that is very far from attracting mass tourism as you rightly pointed out, even if the city itself offers so many highlights for the art and architecture lovers. I guess this sober attitude refers to the fact that Ambrosian church has always been somewhat different from the roman one, and often has considered itself different and not so interested in the political temporal power of the roman church...
Think about the Carlo Borromeo and the age of the counter reformation...he always pushed the fact that richness shouldn't be exposed too much...
so now we have some of the best interiors in europe, while the exteriors may not be as much attracting. It is a problem of communication, at the end.
Milan is one of the best non-capital city in the world I would say...indoor!

...and the very near (and more optimistic) Santo Stefano Basilica, where the painter Caravaggio was baptized.
