The dome is 27 meters in diameter, one of the largest in the city together with Santa Maria della Passione, Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Carlo al Corso church:

Looks like a reduced version of the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul, but this is actually one century and half older than the one in Costantinople...

...And there is also another church that is always so beautiful in Milan...Sant'Ambrogio basilica:

20171002_143132_HDR by 04bc40240a2368c44cd1c20b632e705d, su Flickr

An ancient carved tombstone in the external portico in front of the basilica:

The typical templar chess, symbol of that legendary military order:

20171002_143215_HDR by 04bc40240a2368c44cd1c20b632e705d, su Flickr

Just below the templar chess, an incredibly unknown ancient roman jewel, a frieze depicting harvesting cherubs, dating back to the IV century, on what once was the main entrance to the right bell tower.

20171002_143426_HDR by 04bc40240a2368c44cd1c20b632e705d, su Flickr

You can find these little jewels entring in the basilica by the left door, you'll find the templar chess and the frieze right on your left.

Traces of the original high-middle ages frescoes that once depicted all the basilica. Now you can find them only on the sides of the left apse:

These traces of decorations dates back to the second half of the X century.

A little portion of the original paleochristian structure, beside the so-called Bramante's cloisters:

Notice the typical roman arches:

San Sigismondo, a little romanesque church set in the middle of Bramante's cloisters:

The carolingian masterpiece of Sant'Ambrogio basilica, one of the highest point in all of the high renaissance artistical production, the Golden Altar of Vuolvinius. One of the best piece of art of the Carolingian Era, really.

And now another romanesque church, now almost totally transformed rather into a neoromanesque church, the little but delicious San Babila church, that gives the name to the very popular Piazza San Babila, the heart of the shopping district in a short walking distance from the Duomo cathedral.

The original church is believed to have been built around the IX century, today the most ancient standing element of the basilica are the original romanesque capitals, dating back to the XI century.

The interiors are now almost completely in neo romanesque style, but this little basilica has been for centuries a lovely baroque church! The heavy restoration took place between the year 1881 and 1890, with the facade being completed only in 1905 and the interiors completed with their mosaics only in the year 1929.

San Carlo al Lazzaretto church, built in 1576 by Pellegrino Tibaldi and dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, archbishop of Milan and one of the Father of the Counter Reformation together with San Ignacio de Loyola and Saint Philip Neri. It is a central plan church that once stood in the centre of the Lazzaretto, a large square court where were placed the crowds suffering from plague during the dramatic plague outbreaks.

The exteriors of the little church, in a picture published in this post by Urbanfile.org:
