Wildlife

Wildlife represents a major attraction. This is due to presence of various wildlife species ranging from the big five, Antelopes, Elands, Giraffe, Gazelles, Baboons, Chimpanzee, Monkeys, Hippos, Crocodile to Birds. It is important to mention that South Sudan host possibly the largest wildlife land migration. Beside Traditional photographic safari, this wildlife abundance can also provides ground for research and training in the field of wildlife.

Some of National parks and Game Reserves includes:

- Southern National Park
- Boma National Park
- Bandingilo National Park
- Lantoto National Park
- Shambe National Park.....etc

Wildlife News: South Sudan opens Boma National Park

Quote:
New wildlife park opens in Boma, a huge national reserve in South Sudan's Jonglei State.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Last year GlobalPost reported on the surprising discovery of one of the world's largest animal migrations in southern Sudan, then a soon-to-be-independent country that had only emerged from a hugely damaging decades-long civil war a few years earlier.

The story showed how by protecting its remaining wildlife South Sudan (as its now known) could attract tourists and help diversify its economy away from a near total reliance on oil exports. Reporting this story from Boma National Park made a refreshing change from all the politics, warlike rhetoric and worrying divisions that threaten to topple the new nation.

So it was great to hear that last week the Wildlife Conservation Society and the government of South Sudan have opened the new park headquarters in Boma, a huge national reserve in Jonglei State where much of the recent tit-for-tat ethnic violence has been carried out. The HQ and the wider conservation program are funded by USAID.

Speaking at the opening ceremony General Kuol Manyang Juuk, Governor of Jonglei State, said: “Wildlife is an abundant resource in South Sudan that we have to preserve and use as a source of income. Oil will one day finish, but tourism will continue forever if we maintain our wildlife."

WCS South Sudan Director Dr Paul Elkan described the opening as “another major step toward establishing a functioning network of national parks and reserves across South Sudan, which will provide protection for the country’s exceptional wildlife and great migrations, and provide a platform for creating partnerships to improve security—for the benefit of both wildlife and local communities."

It is hoped that before too long the infrastructure will be in place to allow first tourists to go to Boma to see for themselves the spectacle of the antelope migration and in doing so help change the all too common perception of South Sudan as a place of nothing but strife.

The migration of white-eared kobs across the plains of Jonglei-Boma Landscape is one of the most spectacular wildlife wonders of the world.

South Sudan seeks help from neighbours to develop tourism industry
Quote:
With largely unexploited natural resources, which include forests, grassland, lakes and rivers, the newest independent state in Africa has extensive wildlife that rivals those of other countries within the region, whose economies are maintained by wildlife tourism. The country also boasts of rich traditional cultures and several historical monuments, which added to wildlife projects her as a destination for adventurous eco-tourism.

Aware of the value of tourism to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) her neighbours, South Sudan has embarked on a fact finding mission within the East Africa region to get lessons that can help her develop the virgin sector.

The mission recently saw a delegation of South Sudan officials from wildlife and Tourism sector make several visits to Kenya. Kenya’s tourism industry has shown positive trends over the years. About 12 percent of Kenya’s GDP comes from the industry and was only overtaken recently by tea as the top foreign exchange earner.

Tourism in South Sudan if developed to its potential would attract thousands of tourists into the region boosting the local economy and generating jobs for citizens.

World's Newest Nation to Emerge as Wildlife EcoTourism Hotspot

Quote:
In July 2011, South Sudan became the world's newest nation. As its' population celebrates in the new capital of Juba, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is urging the newborn nation, home to the world's second largest land migration, to protect its ecosystems and rich wildlife in order to build a sustainable and forward-looking economy. South Sudan boasts an abundance of African megafauna that is becoming increasingly rare and endangered throughout much of the continent.

Every year 1.3 million antelope, including white-eared kob, tiang antelope, Mongalla gazelle, and reedbuck, migrate across savanna and wetlands in South Sudan. The migration was only discovered in 2007 after decades of civil war had kept scientists out. Wildlife experts found that much of the wildlife survived the region's political turmoil, including buffalo, giraffe, lion, bongo, chimpanzee, and some 8,000 elephants. "

"South Sudan’s wildlife treasures provide an opportunity for a diverse economy based on eco-friendly tourism in the world’s newest nation. WCS is committed to working with the government of South Sudan and USAID to help manage natural resources in a sustainable way and establish protected areas. Wildlife conservation must play a vital role in the economic future of South Sudan," Steve Sanderson, WCS President and CEO, said in a press release.

"According to WCS, the presence of African mammals in abundance could allow the nation to become a popular ecotourist destination. In 2009, nearby Kenya made $1 billion from tourism while Tanzania brought in $1.2 billion. Tourism, as opposed to large-scale resource extraction, is also sustainable over the long-term. Currently 98 percent of South Sudan's revenue comes from one thing: oil.
