"Low-rise plan disapproved

AROUND 60 percent of online comments on the design of a building on Shennan Road in Luohu District expressed disapproval.
The design, a combination of a 666-meter high skyscraper and a 666-meter-wide low-rise, was made by the Shenzhen branch of China Academy of Urban Planning and Design. Netizens said it might harm the landscape of Shennan Road and were suspicious of the use of a public area for commercial development.
The massive project is part of the district’s urban renovation plan. The low-rise complex, connected by urban corridors, will go across Shennan Road.
“To save land, I think it could be built underground. The complex actually occupies public space and puts the developer’s interest above the public interest,” a netizen lamented.
The academy said in an earlier interview that the design could save space and land for development in Luohu District.
Yet 30 percent of netizens support the plan, saying the project will be spectacular and the corridor will be a landmark and help Luohu to become a center for international consumption and leisure.
District officials plan to invest 100 billion yuan (US$16 billion) in the next five years to renovate five areas: Caiwuwei, Sungang-Qingshuihe, Shuibei-Buxin, Shennandong and Liantang."

So what they're actually saying is that they approve the megatall, but not the lowrise connecting to it?

i certainly hope so. i don't think the lowrise idea is bad, nor do i really love it, so i'm fine with it being dropped, but the highrise is just amazing and i am sure the netizens will see the same

Simply means a majority on an online poll opposed the lowrise. Personally I think the lowrise looks awesome.

Looking at the render, I think it's a bad idea to drop the low-rise. It would give a coherence to the whole group of buildings around it, including the fabulous Kingkey 100.
Really, Kingkey group does great work!
So I say let' em do it!

This is Shenzhen, where height restriction laws do not exist.

I agree. The design of the lowrise is more interesting than the tower. Still it will become an impressive cluster.

Yeah, dont get me started on spires

Im like how is this building taller then this one because there is a needle on top, if I go grab a 300m needle and put it on a 200m building can I call it a 500m building ? Here is a building from my city,

its about 200m, if they decided to add a 200m spire at the end of construction, should it be counted, and be a 400m building ?
