Gedächtniskirche der Protestation, built between 1893 and 1904. Highest spire west of the Rhine between Cologne and Strasbourg:

this is one charming gem of a city that I never heard of before.
I heard about the city of Trier but never been there.

Unknown Speyer

Amazing how many people outside Germany do not know of this wonderful old town. Speyer was lucky to escape mass destruction in the WW2. The great Cathedral is one of the, if not the largest and finest Romanesque buildings in the world, for that reason alone you would think the town would be better known, but for those who visit it's a blesssing not to be overwhelmed by tourists. Thanks for the great photos.

It's located in Rheinland-Pfalz (south of Ludwigshafen, home of BASF).

For an impression of the scale of the cathedral. Was finished building 950 years ago.

The permanent settlement at Speyer isn't that old for the area btw. About 2,000 years, Roman fortress, expanding into a town around 1,500 years ago. Several towns in the area are older on a scale of centuries (Worms, 40 km north, by almost a millenium), and continuous settlement in the area has been proven for at least 5,000 years.

Btw, that autobahn map of RLP posted above is really messed up.
