Indeed Speyer survived WWII without any serious damage (Only the train station and the bridge over the Rhine were hit), but the city was almost totally destroyed by French troops in 1689 - that´s why you find, except the cathedral, only few relics there of its time as one of the largest and wealthiest German cities in medieval times.
