Big Ben To Big Liz - Rename the Famous Tower? good idea?

Big Ben v Big Liz
MPs bid to rename landmark after Queen!

A BID to rename Big Ben the Elizabeth Tower after the Queen will be launched today.

Senior MPs are backing the drive to change the name of the world famous London landmark in honour of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.

It is the idea of Tory MP Tobias Ellwood to show the nation's thanks for the Queen's 60 years of service.

Mr Ellwood will table a Commons motion today which has already been given cross-party support by Tory, Labour and Lib Dem grandees including Sir Malcolm Rifkind and Jack Straw.

The tower beside Westminster Bridge is officially called the Clock Tower, but is universally known as Big Ben after the 13½-ton bell inside.

Identity crisis ... iconic Big Ben
Parliament's other tower was originally called King's Tower but it became Victoria Tower in 1860 in honour of the Queen at the time.

Mr Ellwood said: "I cannot think of a greater tribute for Parliament to bestow than to rename such an iconic landmark as the Clock Tower.

"Most people will continue to call it Big Ben but it would be appropriate to change the official name."

Former Home Secretary Mr Straw said: "It's a very fitting tribute to our monarch."

Sir Malcolm called it "an inspired idea".

Good idea? or are we in the silly season?

They should rename the tower something really interesting like 'shit rocket' or 'anus beast'. That would bring in the tourists.

I don't see the point in changing the name, I bet the majority of people will just continue to call it 'Big Ben' anyway, especially tourists.

Get that from the Daily Mash?

I'd vote for anus beast, imagine the Darwin Award stories you would get from that once the gullible yank tourists got their souveniers home.

Well, given the fact that the tower isn't even called Big Ben, no.

That is absolutely useless.

Millions, even milliards of people will still call it Big Ben, even in case it will be renamed.

I know full well the tower it's called St Stephens Clock tower, and have for many years.

However I still refer to it as 'big ben' and always will.

In the same that that I'm sure we all refer to a woman's lady garden as a 'vagina'... when we mean the whole thing.

Perhaps we should rename Big Ben 'vagina' then.

if you're going to rename it you may as well make some money out of the thing.

how about the "big ben" & jerry's chocolate fudge brownie super cone (with clock). light it up with a big pink ben & jerry's logo on the "cone" then remodel the spire as a massive dollop of brown ice cream.

you're making money (paying down those debts), the kids love it, and everytime the dongs go: "what time is it? - it's big ben & jerry's chocolate fudge brownie super cone time".

I bet that Branson would give HMRC a few quid to call it the Virgin Clock or something.

But it isn't, St Stephens is a different part of the Palace.
