What will it be clad in? Looks extremely reflective ... Almost dangerously so.

is the cladding just a skin to the existing concrete building, I've never really understood this project

Far from it.

http://www.newstreetnewstart.co.uk/c...o-gallery.aspx

Currently New St serves 140,000 people a day. (It's capacity is 70k)

As it's Birmingham largest station it can't be shut down. Which is why it's being phased.

Work done so far

Lifting in new sections to extend Navigation St footbridge.

The construction of a tower crane outside the front of the station. The crane will be used through 2012 to construct the new public square opposite the Bullring

The removal of the old Pallasades link bridge and escalator above Station Street. The removal of the redundant structures is another step towards the construction of the new John Lewis department store which will get underway in 2012.

Preparatory work on platforms 1-7 to construct the foundations for new public space at the front of the station.

Construction of new train crew accommodation above Platform 1

Elswhere, demolition of Stephenson Tower is now complete with work on the new John Lewis department store set to start in the Spring. Work is well underway inside the old Pallasades central retail units to construct the new atrium which form the centrepiece of the redeveloped station, flooding the concourse with natural light.
