Leon Mexico - 29 Oct 13 - Expiatorio by Ted's photos - for me and you., on Flickr

Expiatorio - Centro Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico:

Its full name is the Santuario Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Expiatory Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). Construction of this temple was begun in 1920 by Bernardo Chavez with the support of Bishop Emeterio Valverde y Téllez. It is neo Gothic in design, based on the old European medieval cathedrals but much of the outide wallspace is without decoration. Its work was halted by the Cristero Wars. Since then construction has continued off and on and it is considered 80% complete. An important source of income for the temple's construction is the sale of crypts. This practice was begun in 1924. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Lourdes was begun in 1935 and later a chapel dedicated to the Virgen of Guadalupe, which is separate from the main building, built between 1935 and 1939.

The workers in front are cleaning the water fountain feature that runs from the church out to the street. It features a continuous line of water spouts.

Leon Mexico - 29 Oct 13 - Mucho Stained Glass by Ted's photos - for me and you., on Flickr

The interior of the Expiatory Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Centro Leon, Mexico is a stained glass lovers dream. About a dozen different window treatments. The exterior doesn't hint to the treat inside. If you are in Leon, take a look, it is about a 15 minute walk from the Plaza Principal.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DELLE GRAZIE

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most striking monuments of Lombard Renaissance. The Church was built between 1466 and 1490 under the direction of Guiniforte Solari, only subsequently in 1492 the apsidal part was added by Bramante. In the refectory of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, ancient premises of the Court of the Inquisition, one of the absolute masterpieces of history is kept: Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper.

The fame of the building is also due to the tribune of the apsidal part on today's Via Caradosso, added in 1492. The inside of the church with a double series of side chapels highlights the Solari's Gothic background just as the arcades on the two rows of columns.

The vaults bear frescoed decorations dating from the birth of the building, rediscovered after they had been hidden in 600. From the apse one goes into the small arcaded cloister which leads into the Old Sacristy, built in 1499 and restored in 1982.

The walls are lined with wooden cabinets decorated with rich inlay, above which one can see remains of hand painting and fragments of detached frescoes that date back to the construction of the building.

You will find this great work of art that Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned to paint by Ludovico il Moro, from 1496 to 1498, in the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, outside the church a door, on your right, will lead you into it.

The Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci is ingeniously devised as an expansion of the perspective of the space in which it is set (1495-1497). It is one of the most famous works of art in the world, and has long been an icon of Western civilization. The scene portrays the moment in which Jesus tells his disciples that one of them is about to betray him.

The Last Supper is included in the UNESCO's list. On the opposite wall there is a Crucifixion dating of the same period by Giovanni Donato Montorfano.

I'm from the city of Sevilla, and as a lover of my own city, I'm really interested on looking for which are the biggest cathedrals (and some churches that are not cathedrals too) in the world, and in this topic there are always a lot of different results and not any deffinitive result

Because of this, some time ago I decided to make screenshots of the cathedrals (and churches) that are told to be the biggest in the world, following the wikipedia lists in english and in german.

Of course (it comes from wikipedia) this lists have a lot of mistakes, that can be easily seen, like, for example the Sagrada Familia of Barcelona, but I have tried to not exclude any of the one that appears at the begginings of this list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s_in_the_world
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_d...%9Ften_Kirchen

So if anyone knows another big church of the world that can be added because of its size, you can tell me and I would add it
All the views are taken from 300 meters of heigth:

When the Dutch settles in Bali, they are also interested in spreading Christianity in the island, but they aren't really successful. However they managed to convert a handful, the converts were then expelled by the unconverted Balinese from their villages and treated as traitors, as a result the Dutch gave them land to build their own village. One is dedicated to Catholic namely Palasari and its neighbor for the Protestant Blimbingsari. Both village have their church built in their traditional way.

The level of religious tolerance in Bali today, has enabled other religion to blend in with tradition, there are handful of other churches built in Balinese architecture like this St Joseph Church in Denpasar.
