Anglican Church (Gereja Inggris, Engelsekerk 1829), Jakarta, Indonesia

A land in Batavia was purchased by the London Missionary Society in 1819 to establish a collecting station which would act as a first point for chaplains to disembark to Asian countries such as China or Japan. This is the first English-speaking institution in Indonesia. On January 7, 1822, the Reverend Walter Henry Medhurst was sent by London Missionary Society to work among the Chinese. In the same year he built a bamboo church over the land. The bamboo church lasted until 1828 when the church was renovated into its present form. The first form of the building was finished in 1829 in Georgian Style, without the extensions (the chancel, the sanctuary and the porch). At that time it was called Anglican Church, Dutch Engelse Kerk or Indonesian Gereja Inggris.

ubsequent chaplains were the Church of England, and so the original Missionary layout was changed and a sanctuary was added in 1851. A small organ was installed in 1857. This is replaced with a larger organ which is placed in a newly built special room in 1863. In 1924, these two were combined to form the chancel and sanctuary, the layout that is known today. In 1883, the British Protestant Community was formed which took over the church property. As a result, the name of the church was changed into Church of the British Protestant Community (BPC). Electricity was installed in 1909.

St. Mary Cathedral, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The original church was consecrated to the Virgin Mary by the Right Reverend George Frederick Hose, the Bishop of Singapore, Labuan & Sarawak, on 13 February 1887. This structure was built of timber on Bluff Road, on top of a hill now known as Bukit Aman, where the headquarters of the Royal Malaysian Police is now located. It served as the centre for worship and spiritual life for the small group of Anglicans around Kuala Lumpur at that period. Notable parishioners of the church in that period include the British Residents of Selangor, W.H. Treacher and F.A. Swettenham (later Resident-General of the Federated Malay States and Governor of the Straits Settlements).

In 1893, a decision was made to erect a new building to house the growing congregation, and a new site was found beside the Padang or Parade Ground (now known as Dataran Merdeka or Independence Square) of the Selangor Club. The amount raised by the congregation for the building of the new church was supplemented by a gift of five thousand Straits dollars from the government of Selangor on a suggestion by the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Cecil Clementi Smith. Notable local contributors to the building fund included personalities like Yap Kwan Seng and K. Thamboosamy Pillay, even though they were not Christians themselves.

The foundation stone was laid on 3 February 1894 by the British Resident of Selangor, Sir W.H. Treacher, in a ceremony officiated over by the Bishop G.F. Hose. On 9 February 1895, the 'first brick church erected in the native States of Malay Peninsula' was consecrated by the same Bishop.

St. George's Church, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia

Proposals for a the building of a permanent church were submitted as early as 1810 but was only acted upon after the passing of the East India Company Act 1813 (Charter Act) whereby the EIC received a 20 year extension of its charter. Approval was obtained in 1815 to build the church based on the architectural plans drawn up by Major Thomas Anburey but the church was eventually built on the plans drawn up by the Governor of Prince of Wales Island (as Penang was known then), William Petrie, and modified by Lieutenant Robert N. Smith of the Madras Engineers. Smith was a colleague of Colonel James Lillyman Caldwell, the chief architect of St. George's Cathedral in Madras, and the architecture of St. George's Church is believed to be based on the cathedral itself.

Amongst those consulted on the building of the church was the Rev. Robert Sparke Hutchings, the Colonial Chaplain of Prince of Wales Island. Hutchings would later be instrumental in setting up the Penang Free School. The building was completed in 1818 while Hutchings was still away in Bengal and church services were officiated by a Rev. Henderson. The church was consecrated on 11 May 1819 by the Bishop of Calcutta, Thomas Fanshawe Middleton.
