Doing a master's research in Australia (need help and more info)

Hello, everyone.

I am a student in Stockholm University (Sweden), who is very interested in doing a master's research project in Australia. Even though Australia is not one of the most polluted regions in the World, there can still be some threats to the unique environment of it.
The field of my study is Environmental Science and it would be very good to pick an interesting (ideally, an actual) environmental problem that my thesis work would be based on.
At the moment my area of interest is water/water quality. It would very good to know whether there are any known problems related to, f.i. ground/drinking water quality in any region of the continent? Alternatively, the pollution of other spheres is a topic of interest, aswell.
I would like to sincerely ask you to help me to find out some information about the major environmental concerns in Australia and, if possible, opportunities to develop/participate in a research project. As a person, who dreams about visiting Australia since being a small child, I would love to participate in a project that involves field studies there.

Thank you very much for sharing any information.

Sincerely,

DJ4life.

This seems to be a very actual problem. However, I am worried that there might be not much niche left for doing a research which could contribute to the existing work done. Anyway, do you, by chance, know what institutions, universities, organisations are studying this issue?

Acidification is emerging as a problem in lots of places, due to climate change and water and land use.

Maybe something like this gives you a rough idea of what is going on research wise... http://www.asl.org.au/index.php?opti...d=74&showall=1

UWA, ECU and Murdoch universities in Perth all do environmental water research.

An issue very topical at the moment, particularly in Queensland, is that of Coal Seam Gas mining, and the potential environmental impacts that it has (contamination of farming lands and ground water supplies).

Hi DJ4Life. I'm not an expert at all but some of the areas you could look at would be indutrial runoff and it's impacts on the Great Barrier Reef, salinity, irrigation and drought in agricultural regions.... In Sydney there are some areas where water quality has been affected by inudtrial pollution, the western part of Sydney Harbour, and the Alexandria Canal running into Botany Bay. You should check out these guys http://www.watercentre.org/ The centre was formed by collaboration between 4 top universities and specialises in water management.
