Regrettably, I cannot see similar schemes happening on a grand scale here in Britain.
No you won't see the same thing in Britain as there has been since WW2 an agenda driven by the modernists that once a building is destroyed it should not be rebuilt. There have been exceptions but at the moment I can't think of any! Of course Germany lost a hell of a lot more than Britain resulting in the cities becoming very ugly and unlivable so there is more of a desire to see how their country once looked before the terrible destruction of 1944/45. Manchester and Birmingham lost a lot of fine buildings due to a total disrespect for the past, nothing to do with war damage as was the case in Germany, and it's only been in recent years that they have started to realize how much damage was done through ignorance and a blind faith in the modernists who created concrete monsters unfit for purpose.

Yeah, the sooner that 60's monstrosity goes the better, I still find it difficult to comprehend what went on in the minds of those you created all that ugliness in the 60' and 70's. Of course we still have some freaks and bastards built today but overall there is much more sensitivity with regard to how our inner cities should look resulting in a much more human environment.

I think the horrible skyscrapper is a "high level" hotel with lots of benefits, hence it is not going to be teared down... however I'll hope so. Potsdam is one of my favorite cities, and I think it deserve the best! (and the best is to have the castle gardens instead of this ugly sh*t)

This is great! I didnt realize the amount of reconstruction currently planned. Since my first visit in the early 90s, this city is already unrecognizable.

I agree that more destruction in Europe was caused by the 60-70s modernism, and less so related to damages from the war. This seems especially the case in East Germany where many building could have been salvaged and reconstructed, but the money and political will was just not there at the time.

Thanks for the photo and info update, always great to see updates on this project - its amazing!

It was exactly the same in West Germany. Capitalism was as bad for our historic quarters as communism in the east. In fact, the lack of money saved a lot of the non destructed quarters in the east, they were just neglecting, while we had enough money to tear them down in the west...

Hed, you have a point!

In addition to the drugs, architectural philosophy of the post WWII period became an international movement that focused on utility, natural light, cheap costs, and greater open space around structures. Beauty, human scale, integration with historic settings, tradition, and long term value were generally not part of the planning and design criteria particularly for housing and low-mid end commercial.

Hard to imagine, but the builders of the 50s-80s (and still many today) who finish a concrete blocks with windows that provide clean, warm/cool, work spaces or housing for hundreds of people at low costs consider their jobs well done. Astoundingly, I've even heard such builders refer to their building projects as "throwing it up"...and from my view that statement has two meanings.

Do you all mind if I move this to the Urban Renewal Forum?
