What are they putting up there? I thought they were going to reconstruct the entire "Alte Markt"?

I don´t know...

The Dresden New Market Thread is here too...

If you moving one of both, you have to move otherone too.

The city castle reconstruction in Berlin for example is in the general development thread. Little bit confusing.

I don't mind, but if you really want to do it, then, for the sake of consistency, you'll have to move all the threads related to reconstruction and renovation in here.

There are several just on the first two pages and I'm sure there are more on the following ones:

Reconstruction of Dresden's Neumarkt (New Market)

Warsaw Post-War Reconstruction to Present

Historical Reconstructions that we love! (in Europe)

BERLIN City Palace (Stadtschloss) - Reconstruction as 'Humboldt-Forum' - References

Post-war reconstruction of Gdańsk

Reconstruction in Nuremburg, Pellerhof

Frankfurt Old Town reconstruction

Leipzig - Revitalization of Germany's Gründerzeit capital

...

I guess it's OK to have them both 'cause they fit in both subforuns. But the ones I mentioned, yeah, they should not be here.

I have a feeling the audience in the Urban Renewal forum is a lot smaller atm. Think it'd kill the current threads sort of.

It'd make sense to move the threads there, but at the same time, it also makes sense to keep them here, because we're talking about "classic architecture" indeed.

Else we could also argue to move all threads dedicated to new traditional architecture.

The yea or nay decision to rebuild the Garrison Church is being made this week I believe. There's a 'celebrity signature' drive against it! Never underestimate the idiocy of GDR romantics.

The Barberini webcam can be found here. They're still at the basement level.

There's both good and bad associated with it, and imo Hitler shouldn't be allowed to have power from beyond the grave to prevent such a beautiful building to be reconstructed.

Maybe someone can translate this, or use the google-translater, cause Ypenhofs post is really great. The Church was also the place, where anti-Nazi people refer to the freedome. They explained, what Prussia stands for, for synthesis between commitment and freedome + respect. Only the synthesis is the real prussian dream. 1943 by Tresckow at Garrison Church.

I can translate this quote for those who's interested in.

The issue was that in April 1933 The Nazis (most notably Joseph Goebbels) were using the Garrison Church and other churches in Potsdam to stage a big event in order to seek legitimation for their rule, which suggested a legal continuity between ancient Prussian traditions and national socialism. A picture taken in front of the Garrison Church shows Hitler bowing and shaking hands with Reichspresident Von Hindenburg. This turned out to be a quite shameful event and many opponents of the church reconstruction are associating the old church building with this picture, and use it as their main argument against reconstructing.

However, 10 years later the Potsdam Garrison Church witnessed another event which is not so well known. One of the German leaders of resistance against Hitler was Henning von Tresckow, who like his fellow 1944 coup d'etat leaders were brought up with traditional Prussian values that differed enormously from those of the Nazis. In April 1943 Tresckow held a speech in the Garrison Church on occasion of the Lutheran confirmation of his sons. He told them among else:

"Never forget that you are brought up on Prussian soil, and that you are being confirmed today in the Holy Shrine of Prussia, the ancient Potsdam Garrison church. This will provide you with a huge obligation: The obligation to truth, the obligation to inner and outer discipline, to perform your duty until the very end.
The idea of true Prussianness can never be seperated from the idea of freedom. True Prussianness means a synthesis between commitment and freedom; between proudness of all that is ours and comprehension for the position of others. Only keeping a synthesis of these ideas is the mission of Prussianness; this is the Prussian dream."

So this statement shows that there was also another Germany at the time. Prussia and the Potsdam Garrison Church were not only a symbol of a militaristic state (abused by the Nazis) but also a symbol for a Prussian state based on law, with to some degree a humanist tradition as expressed by Henning von Tresckow. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henning_von_Tresckow) And it should be mentioned that during the Third Reich the Potsdam Garrison church congregation, often consisting of Prussian officers, was one of the few congregations that resisted Nazi ideology in their church.
Therefore I think it is indeed morally right to rebuild the Garrison church to its former glory.
