Have a look at a different reconstruction: The canal. The canal was filled in because of un-proper wastewater disposal. Used as parking lot, it went out of picture. Now the canal is going to be rebuild. Included the bridges. the fence posts are all from donations and have names of every donator on them!

If Potsdam completely reconstruct itself, it would instantly become one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Unfortunately, there is this huge problem called MONEY.

How many buildings will be reconstructed according to the prewar plans along the canal? I've seen some pictures of the canal and the buildings on Arstempano and those grand palaces that were lining the canal were absolutely beautiful. How wonderful it would be if they reconstruct them all...

Also, what "concrete monster" are you referring to, Eagle?

The concrete building in the middle behind the trees. There is some debate of dismantling it, but it was put in writing by it's owner, the city.

I had a power and media outage in the middle of putting pictures here! Can anybody believe it? After having no time for Skyscrapercity in two weeks. That's how it goes.
Let`s stay in the same area and talk about the next reconstruction just started!

This is about the old Post building. Replaced after the war with a 9 story lowrise. The lowrise has been torn down to fix the streetscape. The owner will build a location for a Bank to rent. The build is a reconstruction, but recently the idea of a mix of old and new is taking ground. horrible! See for yourself:

Hello! Here for some orientation:

# 10 is the old Post
# 11 is the concrete Monster I called so

# 5 is called "Gasthaus Ploeger" also for reconstruction.
But if they go away with 100% reconstruction. What is left of our trust?

some parts where rescued and can be easy reused!

They would have to be completely stupid not to go with 100% reconstruction. This is a unique opportunity for the city. Potsdam can shine again in all its glory, and designs like that Post building will absolutely ruin it. Don't get me wrong, the proposed building is not that bad, but it isn't a pearl, either. It's something you build in new developments, not in the very center of the city. Fortunately, it resembles the prewar building so it can be reconfigured later when they realise how stupid mistake they made...

The Stadtschloss and the surrounding market will change over the next view years!

btw. The Schloss had 200 000 visitors in the first year!

This column had to be taken apart 'cause they did a wrong fix up in the 1960's
The cummis also took some faces of. Now fresh redone and some $ later

Now to the yellow building. Will be torn down. Still in use:

The other side of the church: The "Stauden Hof" Behind the canal to be reopened

To be demolished also. In the middle the Nikolei Kirche or church
No investments here as well. Renals still in use.

source Thanks Potsdam-fan

Let's talk stupid. Let's talk about mother natures architecture. Potsdam has several square miles of public gardens and parks! I have not be able to count the parks jet! The department of parks and gardens is trying not to take tax money. difficult that is! Last year they earned with horse, music, ballet shows and entrance fees, with donations and commercial contracts es well as rental units 72 million Euro. All that money was spend of course in cutting grass, growing hundert's of banana trees or restoration projects! After all that the gardens and parks is still hopelessly underfunded. To replace a fountain can easily cost 200 000 or a new bridge can have a price sticker of 1-2 mill. That is why the parks and garden department takes help from associations for reconstructions. This little department is doing lot's of re-constructions, believe me. They have hundert's of so called lust-buildings or structures. What that is? A lust structure has no specific purpose. Just a building in the woods build for it's good looking. Hundreds of them waiting to be helped. Estimates for a complete parks reno go into the range of 600 to 800 Million
Still the Parks Potsdam are trying to fix up and rent or use as many as possible. Right now, there is a waterworks reconstruction in Park Babelsberg going and also the winemaking garden is being put back together with the help of hundreds of Potsdamer. The wine will be sold. This is the "Widzer Berg". The winemaking will start this year.
The facility had almost vanished! The magnificent gate survived:-)

Or the Park Babelsberg, around the Schloss Babelsberg also under renovation.
It had been neglected, for once it ended up in poor East germany. But the park was also right on the German - German Border death strip, watched by non German snipers (They have no relationship to the people) and landmines!!! The lakefront of the park was forbidden.

Another lust-building just refinished in Babelsberg Park. The "Flatowturm" build from 1853 to 1856. It is a copy of a turm - tower in Frankfurt. Potsdam is full of copies.
There are guest apartments for rent in there plus a public view for everyone. Behind that you see the Post and Fern tower Schaefer Berg / Berlin from 1964

Thanks Eagle! I'm so impressed with the reconstructions going on in Potsdam --especially that canal, That is going to be really beautiful! I love the idea of people who donate getting a fencepost in their name etc., (I have a block I bought in the Berliner Stadschloss myself). I'm saving up to buy a spindle next year, Please keep us updated!

After not having been active on this community in ages, I finally logged back into simply to publically complain about the plans not to rebuild the structure of the old Post building the way it was, but a MUCH more watered-down version that looks so much less unique. Why the HELL would they cheapen it!? As you can tell I get really frustrated with things like this, haha. In all seriousness though, do any of the forumers, namely the German ones, know of anyplace where people can voice opposition to the new plans and, similarly, support for the original? My German isn't great so I'm worried if I wrote them directly they would just get annoyed, haha. Vielen Dank!

A little bit more about the vineyard. The Triumph archway in front from 1851.

This building is called the Winzerhaus. Winzer is the german term for winemaker. The winemaker lived in there back then. I think they are going to open a wine restaurant in there. Witch suits the place and the vibe.

Much to do:

The association winzer berg put this nice saying up for new members.

website:winzerberg-potsdam.de
this Obelisk in front of the wine berg needs some redoing. He is good for now.

All these projects make me really happy, although they should forget about this mix of the new Deutsche Bank ''reconstruction'' aka ''complete f_cking failure''. Just reconstruct the damn thing in it's whole, as it used to be, instead of just mixing it up trying to creative.

How difficult can it be to just reconstruct and let things be?

BTW I love how Potsdam is opening up its canal again. You also see that a lot nowadays in The Netherlands where cities go like ''sh_t, we really miss the charms that the canals gave to our city!'' and decide to dig 'em out. Happened in Breda and a few other places around the country.
