The "Gesims is finished!

Instead of wood, metal is used. The only difference

Such a lovely rebuilt baroque gem in the centre of royal Potsdam! Remember: nothing was there before. This is all thanks to the SAP founder and generous donor Hasso Plattner!

Too bad we don't get more reconstructions. I wonder what will happen with the area which is now occupied by that ugly, decayed, modernist atrocity, right next to the Stadtschloss, I hope they don't go full "Dresden" on that one.

Hello, friends of good taste and cheers!

The Keller Tor Wache private reconstruction is moving. Therefore updates!

Potsdam-fan!

Let`s jump to another project. The northern Columns at Glienicker Bridge are also getting a facelift next year. The southern got theirs last year. Minor reconstructions from missing of smaller parts included. 450 000 Euro. The reconstruction of the fountain is not included as for now. The renovation came to be needed because in an earlier attempt to fix the Columns like 50 Years ago or so, iron staples where put in between the stones. Iron of course is a no-go, because it rusts and expands. Like many ill-attempted renovations of the former DDR this one has to be redone the proper way. Some of the money is from donations and cake selling. The bridge is the former Reich`s Strasse 1. The former Hwy #1. In the Cold war, the bridge used to be an East/West border and closed. Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies plays on this very bridge.

Year 2014

This villa, Haus Schoeningen is a reconstruction as well.

source Potsdam-fan!
now, 2016. renovations started

Last tuesday. The Columns have to be taken completely apart to get the iron parts out, before the stone chips apart because of it!

If you mean that ugly yellow building, you will be pleased to know it is to be demolished in 2017. I believe historic reconstructions are to take its place.

Hello and welcome back!
The brand new museum Barberini has opened for the public. The kick is that the expedition is still not set up! The empty Museum is open! First for free. People are given a chance to experience the reconstruction before it becomes a Museum. Now it turns out that it is so popular, 60 - 100 000 people will visit before the art moves in! It is the talk of all of Potsdam, Germanys secret Capital and the rest of the country! Visitors come even from Hamburg! Here some pictures from APH user Brandenburger, who aloud me to post his pictures:

The entrance hall

The empty Museum attracting around 80 000 people in three months!

The ceilings are amazing!

We are here in one of the side wings! Every second window has been skiped

This is the Lelbachsaal on the first floor in the middle. Called Lelbach after Mr. Lelbach who paid private for this Museum. It is private. The expeditions, also private collection come from Mr. Hasso Plattner. DDR Modernism.

The stairs, very high quality

amazing, what color can do!!

The reconstruction of the Norwegian Restaurant / yacht club "Kongsnaes" has finely begun! The building is finished and needs to be assembled here. The wooden building was his Majesties private boat house.

thanks, Potsdam-fan.

Some excitement at the Potsdam Wild park. The military had to dispose of some Russian and American explosives.

The bombs where found over the last year and put aside. They do that if possible. This one is from Babelsberg

This is the Wild Park. 5 bombs and 15 grenades where blown up here two days ago.

Barberini is magnificent! As always, thanks for the updates The Eagle! People who oppose reconstructions need to see how successfully the Barberini turned out.

Merry Christmas to You and Your family and a glorious new year to everyone!

During Christmas I have been busy with my family, but now we can have some nice pictures as to keep us updated during winter. We will also take a look at a reconstruction not mentioned here before. But that one went wrong somehow. So stay tuned! And at the end, as a treat, we will take a trip to the peacock island and take a look at medieval remains and castle.

Customers sitting outside while it is freezing

Humboldt Quarter, Stadtschloss

The house for the gardeners next to a small nursery on the friendship island

This used to be the old city hall

The plastic "pelicans" from 1956

Old city hall, Nikolai Kirche

museum Barberini taken from friendship island

Here the corptus delicti. The rebuild (?) former Church with tower. Blown up by communists 1974.

This is called the "Heilig Geist Park Residenz " The church has been re-build as a nursing home for seniors in the 90`s

Thank You, Potsdam-fan!

The former tower of the Heilig Geist Church used to be here. The rest was rebuild much better. It is a large seniors home now

The yellowish long building is the newer main railway station and shopping mall

Public bath under construction

former restaurant. Will be demolished

The railway station with mall. The Water tower is the only old thing. Looks out of place. Water was needed for steam machines.

Communist apartments behind

Tower of the Friedenskirche, Monopterus and military Orphanage

The buildings in red are new.
