Now, Ladies and Gentlemen let us pay a visit to the Peacock island. It contains a collection of buildings and a castle in original state of 1790! The "Pfaueninsel"

Looking south west, Sacrow church and castle on the right, Potsdam straight down

The castle is a timberframe build that has a wood cladding. It is designed as fake ruin. (Yes another one)

The gardeners are employing water ox to keep the grass short

This is the "Kavalier haus"

This building is special. More interesting than the castle. The tower is original in Gothic from the year 1360 in the town of Nurnberg. The building was bought and moved to the town of Danzig in the year 1480! In the Year 1804 the King bought the from demolishing threatened building to save it and moved it, because the plot was owned by some investor. Here on Peacock island it is save. In the year 1824 and 1825 Schinkel expanded the building as guesthouse for his Majesty

The Meierei, a farm to make milk. In the same theme;-)

The farm buildings

Kept in Gothic

Like the other kings farms, full in use with animals!

The neighbor island. Calve island. Owned by a boating clup

Pictures by APH user Vulgow. Thanks.

Portikus of Queen Luise!

Queen Luise

Bird cage from 1842. Not in use. The Berliner ZOO started here! Unbelievable. Like a trip down history. In fact, the castle does not even heating. That is what I call "original"

And Peacocks of course. Lots of them here everywhere!

Build for exotic birds during winter

Apparently they do not have enough ox.

The garden and flower nursery

Too hot for this one! Summer days are dog days!

This is for the royal yacht "Royal Louise" we seen before

Thanks, Vulgow.

Being on an island has it`s perks. Not much gone during the war.

The Museum Barberini just opened last weekend with world-class collections including impressionists like Rodin, Monet and Edvard Munch and various quality GDR artworks.

And obviously it'll be a mighty success with the audience (like most reconstructed beauties), the people queued for hundreds of meters to see it!

No, they are not. The construction will become a public bath.

So, welcome everyone and nice to have you back!

Time to update the situation at the "other" railroad station. The "Burger Bahnhof" The timberframe building used to be one of three railway stations and was closed. The build had to be taken apart and put back together. That finished 2015. The owner stalled the project and finished other projects. But now this project will finally come to and happy end. I bet we from SSC agree!
The plan is to use the build as a beer garten.
The first pictures from 2015

Graffiti on the roof!

The "new" big railway station is next to it

Now 2016

And now 2017

Let`s hope for the best!
I wonna my beer!

The Garrison Church "Peter and Paul" will be build here

The commie block will fall. The block, funny enough, is not on the church lot. But they are 1 m apart!

Now we jump to the to the "Breite Strasse" project
The Brockessches Palais

The former "Montierungshaus and Langer Stall"

The canal. They may turn it into a tourist attraction, like: A walk at the bottom. Or so.
The visualization

The finished project

Now something exotic.
I like to show you this newly build. It is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, with his 1920`s and 30`s design. Construction has taken forever.

I also like to show you people this. The Stadtschloss is the new Government building. Since space seems never enough, the government ( Of the state/province of Brandenburg, around Berlin) build this office complex. Since everything is nice and baroque at the other place, no one took care of this nonsense architecture. I am sorry to show this, but like to give an realistic impression of Potsdam.

Hoffbauer Strasse. brand new Government offices

Sorry for the pictures.
Potsdam-fan, thanks!

Wonderful pictures but why are many of pots dam's old buildings being reconstructed? who is funding these projects? I assume some of them are pretty expensive, such as that church

Thank you for enjoying this thread! The reconstructions are all private.
Potsdam is becoming Berlins "Beverly Hills" and can afford it. The Babelsberg Film Studios are a big employer, too.

The Norwegian Village is getting some speed in re-constructions!
The parts being delivered! How exciting!

Let`s talk about a different project. The parliament moved into the brand new reconstructed Stadtschloss. So far, so good. As a saying goes. The parliament used to be in this building.

The pictures we are enjoying, like this one:

Have been taken from up here. Many people take pictures from the top of this building, but never from the building

source Wikipedia

The building used to house the School of Military. Finished by design from Franz Schwechten in 1903. Remodeled and added by the wing in the back 1935. The Tower was simplified due to the money and the building turned into a storage for Military files.
In 1947 the building was turned into the head office for the local Communist administration. The funny round symbol at the tower was a painted communist propaganda logo! 1990 came the "Wende" as it is called. The building became the parliament for the state/province of Brandenburg. Now the building is empty and will be sold. Condos, Apartments or a hotel are in the talks. The view is the downtown view we see often here in our thread!
The investor will have to rebuild and renovate a lot. The technical appliances are original 1903! The fire exit for some rooms are up to the attic, cross the attic and down again! Considering that the heat in such a event rises, not that good of an idea.
Anyhow, people in Potsdam are trying to get the Timberframe Gables redone and the tower reconstructed. But we are at mercy of the situation!
The People used to nickname the building during the DDR rule the little "Kremlin"

The original form as School, cool!

Today. The former "Little Kremlin"

Brand new buildings below the former parliament. Usually in the back of the pictures we see of Potsdam

The area is called "Speicher Stadt" in Potsdam. This is the "Havelgarten" Havel is the name of the river

Build to be here. The two commie block buildings on the left are a former restaurant and a former public bath. Both will be demolished and rebuild bigger and better. The city is growing.

Potsdam-fan, thank you!

The new bath will look like this:

There was a "better" "Niemeyer" design. Will not be build:

Railway station in the back. Behind that the Stadtschloss and Barberini.

We turn around and see little Kremlin! Lol. I just can`t get over that name! Lol

The old pool. From 1971. Will be demolished

Max-Planck-Strasse

Anyway, this is now:

This was the not chosen first idea in the year 1862 from Heinrich Wiethase.

The Kings and later Kaisers wanted to make Potsdam more fairytale and therefore added more castles. Since money was tight and his majesty had enough castles to live in, other buildings where designed to look like castles for the big castle collection of what is today Potsdam

This is a current idea of the remodeling. The idea is to add the right hand buildings seen in this rendering

This would become the new front. The communist logo becomes a tower clock. The roof will stay the way it is in this rendering

The rendering with no reconstruction would look silly

pictures, Potsdam-fan and Pagentorn!

Colonade question

Not far away the colonnades getting getting their facelift

Is this the same colonnade that is along the Potsdam Schloss? If so, I saw in old photographs that the colonnade had sculptures between the columns. Are those being restored and will they be reinstalled in the colonnade?

Are any of the interiors of the Potsdam Schloss being restored? Any new sculptures added to the parapet of the Schloss?

When does construction on the Garnison kirche begin?

Hello, dbmillbank!

The Garnision Kirche "Peter and Paul" will begin in July this year

The interior of the Stadtschloss is not coming back. The next sculptures on the roof will come this summer

This colonnade is a different colonnade. This one is at the former Reichs Street 1 Havel crossing and former east/west border crossing. It is close to the huge Park Babelsberg on one side and the Norwegian Village on the other.
Close to this "little curiosity" called thing:

Here the bridge

The other colonnades ( Potsdam has colonnades at 16 places, we have not covered them all just jet ) are in the "Altstadt", pre 1870`s

Here is an up to date plan, this one with criticism written in it in white writing

Thank you Konstantindegeer and potdam-fan!

Let`s get started

This comes from APH member Konstantindegeer
we see in white on the top left Jan 2017 with all the critic
The red buildings survived the war.

- On the left in orange the former "Alte Post" office witch was to become a reconstruction, but changed by the same city, "wanted" a reconstruction at first

- Below on the left " Einsiedler" former restaurant and pub. A so called "Gasthause". With Guestrooms upstairs. Scheduled reconstruction. reconstruction canceled. New look-alike will be here. Instead of a Guesthouse with pub will become a bank outlet!

- Next to it the "Steuben Platz". Very important for American-German relation, because he was send to the USA to create an USA army corps for independency. The little square had this name for the past 200 Years. The critic is its "loveless" modern appearance.

- Next to is the removed colonnade with the Ringer Statues. The Statues have not returned jet and people are demanding an answer of the where about. Some are still pissed, the colonnades where not extended with a new "gate" cross the square and road.

- At the other side of the Stadtschloss and Parliament is the "Barberini". The criticism is about the riverside was insulated in Styrofoam.

- The orange buildings are supposed to be reconstructions. Only five left. The yellow will be new alike.

- The eight corner intersection will not be reconstructed completely as intended.
One building still exists in red, the second will (or not anymore?) be reconstructed and the other two dropped completely by this plan!

We will see some fight coming up! You bet
