Which is the safest major city in the world?
From what I've read, it sounds like London. Recent statistics suggest London has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000, which I would hazard a guess is probably even lower than the stereotypically safe places like Tokyo and Hong Kong.
That said, Londoners often talk about their city as being a bit of a crime infested dump, but maybe if you've never lived in another similarly sized city then perhaps it would seem that way? However, the statistics appear to suggest otherwise that London is an extremely safe city for its size and certainly not dangerous by world, or even European standards. |

My vote would go to Singapore.
I highly doubt London is the safest city... |

I'd also say it's Tokyo.

Tel Aviv is probably one of the safest cities in the world that is both extremely fun (and lively) and doesn't feel overly sanitized. Violent is almost non-existent and petty crime is pretty uncommon. Young women can walk safely by themselves in the middle of the night without any problems.

It strikes me that what keeps London safe is a relatively efficient police force (for the most part) and arguably some of the strictest firearms laws in the world.
It seems London's relatively safety is not down to having a particularly civilised population, but rather a population that is controlled, watched closely and effectively live in a mini-police state where police have enacted an aggressive policy of stop-and-search reminisant of some American cities. For those who know London, would you say this is accurate? |

Murder is probably a rough guide to go off of, as most cities statistically are pretty much the same when you think about it. New Orleans is a US city that many people view as scary and violent, but every year 99.955% of the people there manage not to get killed.

Ah, and another city vs city thread. What is safe? Car accidents? Murder? Theft?
